brad is now starting to finish up my guitar as well....here are a few glossy pics. it's not the final finish but should give you an idea of how the color combinations might turn out...

here's how the end graft ended up....

here's the bevel...the red on the coco shining through...

and here's the inlay on the back...

Looking beautiful! I like the elegant inlay/design on the back. Only you might see it, but it is a very nice, personal touch.

Thanx Mike. There's a story behind that inlay which I'll detail in another post at some point.....

thanx Will. that end graft did come out looking cool, right?! if you've been following this thread, you'll remember that this design was based on doerr's end graft. my original idea was to use the same wood for the top and bottom flutes as we did for the binding so that they will appear as "tabs" off the binding being held together by that koa piece in the middle. the purfling all around the guitar is koa but Brad thought that we should surround that koa piece with a single maple line instead to make it pop out more giving it that almost 3d effect of sitting on top of the two tabs .

EDIT: forgot to add, there won't be any electronics on this one.

well, if you've been following sachi's build thread here, then already know that brad, with guidance from mr. tim mcknight, was able to "debug" his finishing environment. so instead of sending sachi's and my guitar out, he's able to do the finish himself.

so without further delay...here are some pics of the almost finished product .

Looks lovely! Brad, how do you rate Wenge's difficulty to work with?

Thank you very much!

Wenge:
Well, the way I do pore filler it goes on extremely thin, so it takes a few more coats to fill the utterly cavernous pores of this stuff, but other than that it's one of my favorite woods. I will say that the first time I tried to work with it I broke 3 sides trying to bend them. Now that I do double sides it's not a problem because the side wood is so much thinner than before. I finally found somewhere that Wenge bends best up around 365 degrees. Then, just move very slow when bending it; let the wood "give" before forcing it and you'll avoid cracking it and also it will have less spring back this way.

Thank you for watching and for the compliments!!

Very very nice! I'm glad to see that your build is going together so well, Wency. The end graft is lovely, and I do like the way the bevel turned out. It'll be a delight, I'm sure!

Absolutely stunning guitar!! i have been following this build as well as the one for sachi. I have to say i am going to need to start saving my pennies and order myself a kolaya. I love the endgraft and soundhole rosette. The soundhole offset to match the rosette is my favorite part of this one. If you decide its not for you once you get it ill take it off your hands I cant wait to see it finished

i've got a bunch of new pics from brad. he's got the guitar already assembled. here he's working on the bridge. i just love the shape of brad's bridge!

notice the 2.187" spacing instead of brad's usual 2.25". when i visited mando bros. not too long ago, i played a lot of fine guitars. but the two collings OM i played felt the most comfortable for me. so we modeled the neck after the standard collings OM profile.

on wednesday, my gotoh 510Z came in...

and finally, the guitar is now resting in the case...will sit there for about a week before brad does the final intonation...

woohoo! almost there....

Looking really good, Wency! Mine's at about the same stage – I'll put up some pics now in my build thread as well.
