Default Why do you think that 'Casino' could be finest gangster crime Feature ever made?

I hypothesize long term, financially beneficial crime(as in law breaking) emerges when the government states that something some people really want engage in repeatedly. For instance gambling, prostitution or narcotics should be forbidden or limited by some method.

I am guessing back late 1940's USofA gambling as an activity was generally frowned upon by the federal presidential authorities and there were very strict rules that it could only take place on an officially licensed premises.

At that time when states were probably quite morally conservative, maybe the Nevada state government spotted that there was a profit target in being more liberal in it's license grants?

This potentially gave individual government official enormous personal power n their discretion to award specific gaming licenses.

For me, the most well executed scene verbally and atmospheric in 'Casino' was when the Robert DiNiro character 'Sam 'Ace' Rothstein had an office meeting with the local governement commissioner to discuss the firing of his idiot nephew from the slot machine floor.

There was real dramatic tension to this scene particaly with the choice of pointy cowboy boots. So probably the director, Scorsese, correctly spotted how Las Vegas grew out of state corruption, like a phoenix from the desert sands.

But the rest of the film was not quite as good. The scene where Joe Pesci killed another man in the bar with a fountain pen looked very realistic, but imo no self respecting gangster would do such a momentous thing without a much better reason.

Also there is no reason that when the decision was made by the Commission King to get out of Vegas that have made such an amateurish mistake in a dysfunctial car bomb that Rothstein could have surivived. More likely, that key figure would have been cleaned out in a routine car 'accident' or possibly in a restuarant by long acting strychnine poisoning - so as to fake heart attack.

It could be argued that there was an almost Shakespearian love relationship between the Sharon Stone Character and Sam Rothstein

For me the film the key visual scene was the helicopter shot of the Sphinx pyramid hotel at the end. So I went there.. and imo the new LV Pyramid is totally more impressive and striking than the original pyramids that I previosly went ot in Egypt.

But I was disappointed by the Venice hotel compared with the concept of the authentic site in Italy.

There are scenes in "Casino" that make the whole film unwatchable for me.

Yes it is possible unless you have a capacity for physical violence, that a person would not enjoy all of the movie

The movie should be at least considered for the top spot for casting Don Rickles in a serious acting role.

It's not. Good Fellas, for one, is much better.

Apologies - but Casino is a better organised crime than Goodfellas.

Clearly as a piece of compelling story-telling the Godfather trilology probably 'trumps' everything.

But trust me, in terms of 'down and nasty' reality the Casino/Goodfellas ouevre wins.

For me, if you cut out the whole Crazy Joe Gallo arc, which contributes nothing to the story, "The Irishman" is outstanding.

I'm less crazy about Godfather II than most people, because they couldn't get Richard Castellano back to play Clemenza. Transferring his story to Frank Pentangeli, who doesn't appear in the first movie, is confusing. It would have been much better to have Clemenza turn on Michael than the previously unknown Pentangeli.

I never liked gangster / mob movies until about 7-8 years ago. I enjoy them now. In that time I've watched all the Godfather movies, Casino, and others I can't name. I liked Casino.

How about Scarface with Al Pacino? Great movie.

I guess it a personal interest but I misse the story line on the mchanics of how Al Pacino was acutsally grossing so much cash in that movie.

But sadly I have a feeling that Bathromm scens featuring the chainsw was contextaully accurate generally speaking

If it doesn't have Pacino in it I'm out - though Godfather 3 tried to pull me back in.
