Mediums on a Rainsong Dread?
Has anybody put medium strings on a Rainsong dread? If so, what did you think?

Hi Randy,
My experience with mediums on Rainsongs is limited to clients guitars that we set up with mediums, and as expected the heavier gauge did "fatten up" the tone with only minimal loss of the highs. I stick with 12's on all five of my Rainsongs but mediums are worth a try. In fact next time I re string my BI-DR1100NS short scale dreadnought I will be trying mediums. |

I don't have a dread but I do have a WS-1000. Sometimes I put mediums on it and it is just fine. It does produce a bit more tone, but this guitar is LOUD with lights anyway. Mine mostly wears lights (12-53) but I use mediums for maintaining roughly the same overall tension and playing feel when I'm down into lowered tunings.

I tried the Martin Tony Rice Monel's. Darkened it up quite a bit, but when flat picking, I was able to achieve just about any desired tone by varying the pick I would use. Picks can do as much(perhaps more) in changing the mood of a guitar.

Not a dread, but I tried mediums on my WS-1000, similar body size. Personally, I didn't feel there was any improvement in tone, I don't need more volume than the lights provide (already a volume monster!), and the mediums are less playable than lights.
