Is Ryan just strumming most of the time or is he strumming and picking out notes so fast I just can't see it? Camera work is good evidently my eyes aren't...

Just strumming. His left hand is doing the note work. Highly effective in solo performances.

He's using hammer on / pull off technique frequently.

It's kind of a cross-picking thing. A lot of the solo Irish acoustic guitarists I see do a lot of that at a little higher level.

I think I understand what you're trying to ask. He's emphasizing the root note of the chord on the downstroke before the hammer on or pull off.

Actually, pretty simple stuff done effectively and as mentioned, great for solo work. Just playing as he feels it.

Kind of reminds me of Neil Young a little.
Watch him play Needle and the Damage Done live. He does a constant DUDU strumming but also hits individual notes. And its pretty clean sounding. Its like he does these big down up strums but only hits one note at a time.
That's not exactly what Ryan is doing, but it put me in the mindset of Neil Young's playing.

Funny you mention this. I thought the same person (Neil) only I was specifically thinking of an acoustic version of Cowgirl in the Sand that he does. As soon as the video started, I was thinking of Neil playing that.

YES! That too. I didn't even think of that. He does it a lot. I've been trying to master his way of playing for a while. Its very difficult.
