This pure speculation, but I'm going to say that the change in tone is probably 90% strings and 10% saddle. Yes, the saddle should fit snugly... but I've played plenty of great-sounding guitars that had a saddle that would just drop out if you took the strings off and flipped the guitar over. It's a variable, but IMO a small one compared to strings.

I have a feeling you are right.
I might have just stumbled onto the perfect strings for this guitar - well to my ears at least.

DR Sunbeams round core PB's Lights 12-54 - amazingly good value too.
