Not to hurt your feelings but John pretty much played anything with strings - a few that i known of are : Ovation , Guild , Yamaha , Greven , Mossman , Gibson ( and Taylor of course ) etc.
I have not seen any of him with a Martin ( in any picture ive seen ) but that doesnt mean he hasn't.

I remember the Guilds , which is why I always wanted a D-55, which I now have, and this guitar, which I never knew what it was,

Which I NOW know is a Yamaha L-53.

I knew he played Ovation Adamas guitars , later.

Yes. In his definitive years, he was a Guild man. He had a real nice touch strumming those jumbos.

I believe when he was on Johnny Carson , he was playing his 12 string Greven ( believe its on U tube )
. i actually was in John Greven's shop in Nashville Indiana when he was building 2 guitars for John D. and was
able to check out the guitars ( heard he also had a third one built )
-have a picture of my dad holding that guitar , I also heard it was destroyed in a car accident .
