Custom Options
Hey Tristan,
I thought I'd mention all the custom options I requested here in the thread: 1) Bi-level headstock a-la Kraut 2) Celtic Cross inlay on fingerboard 3) Green Alalone binding 4) Minnie bevel - I asked for this and sent Dave my ideas. He added his own twist and came up with something he likes so much that they may replace their current design with this one. 5) Aged Redwood 6) Trance pickup All these things contributed to the price you had guessed - all in all a steal for a guitar of this caliber. |

Jim,
Just saw your address and realized I'd missed this thread on your soon to be new guitar! Very exciting......and such an interesting story and background to how it evolved for you to have this build completed. Many congrats and best wishes, Fred

How do these offset guitar with "gypsy style" bridge sound different from the "regular bridge" acoustic guitars?
I tried to listen to the sound sample, and I was wondering if it sounds like a hybrid between acoustic, archtop, and gypsy guitars? (I can't really tell just from the video audio). I've realized that how you tie the strings to the bridge and how much down force and torque it applies has a lot to do with the guitar sounds we are familiar with. So I wasn't sure how much difference that is making vs. the offset hole? Last edited by Johnny_Boy; 06-16-2019 at 09:19 PM. |

Scallops
Hey TK. Yeh, the scallops just don't do it for me. Cool idea but I like a straight edge better.

Thanks Fred,
I'm excited about it. After seeing your thread, however, I have to avoid my addictive tendency for GAS - I'd love to have a Doerr some day. All the Best, Jim |

Hey JB,
These are designed to be a traditional steel string guitar (not jazz, archtop, or gypsy). The way I understand the idea is to minimize the pull tension/stress the strings put on the top to allow it to be free to vibrate. This freedom in turn gives the luthier more freedom/options to maximize and tune their tone. Dave, from what I understand, is shooting for extreme resonance and responsiveness with great balance across the tonal range. The offset sound hole moves the opening to an area on the top where less vibration occurs allowing an area where more vibration occurs (the traditional sound hole opening in the middle of the top) to be freed up to contribute sound. The combination of the two, the floating bridge and the offset sound hole, work together to maximize the tone. One other thing -the guitar has an elevated neck which does not touch the top. All in all I would say it doesn't sound anything at all like a gypsy or archtop. All The Best, Jim Quote:

New Photos as of 6/22
The sound box is assembled and waiting final sanding and finish.
The next three shots give and idea of the minnie bevel which is much smaller than a regular Ryan. Dave also wanted to give it a different angle which is more ergonomic. I really like the way it flows with the curve of the guitar and is unobtrusive. The binding is figured Acacia which will really pop once the finish is on. Babloo shapes the neck
Here's the latest from Dehradun India. Babloo is shaping the neck. The bi-level head stock is taking shape and the Celtic Cross inlay is almost finished. The body is in the finishing shop now and should be done by next week. Getting stoked on this end. I think she's going to be extraordinary.

That is also the impression I got from one of the dealers I deal with regularly who has ceased their dealing with Dehradun.

hey Jim,
I had the guys make me an SJ sinker redwood/wenge a year and a half ago and I love it! But when I saw the offset soundhole Guitars I was in love. Sadly as you know the shop is closed and I'm re to buy what David says is the last guitar made in the shop; sinker cedar/rosewoood offset with bevel and bass port. I'm pretty excited to say the least. I don't know if you ever saw the semi hollow electric he made but it was awesome. I'd love to have him make another.

It's too bad they have closed down - it was a good work the luthier who started it was doing for the community and for those men. I hope the luthiers who were trained at dehradun can continue to use their skills to elevate their lives and the lives of their families.
