….oh yeah….I highly recommend taking a Dreadnought for a spin….some pretty heavy hitters have played Dreadnoughts in open tunings….Michael Hedges…Joni Mitchell…Stephen Stills…Neil Young…John Martyn…..to name just a few….

How many of you use a dread for fingerstyle?

I do. And of course I use a dreadnought for strumming and flat picking, as well.

I use a dreadnought the same way I use any of my other guitars.

Everyday I have the blues. Everyday I fingerpick my dreads.

I do. If you look at my signature list, dreads and jumbo are all I play.

I don't get it ... the clue is in word itself 'finger style' ... it's a 'style' of playing a guitar just like 'strumming' and 'flat picking' are styles.

You can play finger style on any size guitar.

I play my smaller guitars (Seagull Folk and 00-15M) more but fingerpick and strum them all. My dread (J-35) is especially satisfying for many fingerstyle pieces, and the smaller guitars take a pick very well too. It's just what I am in the mood for at the time.

Always loved finger picking a dread, just getting a bit cramped sitting down playing one these days!

My traditional styled Bob Thompson Adi EIR and hog DNs require a lot of force for fingerstyle. The tradeoff is they are loud as heck when flat picked.

Don Sharp DN with Somogyi inspired bracing is much more responsive and easier on my right hand.

Any style can be played on any design of guitar.
However, the differng styles of guitars were designed fr differing styles.

I have recorded videos of fingerstyle on dreads, but as I have a style 0,00 and 000 guitars they would seem far more suitable.
When I perform I always use a 12 fret dread, medium strings and 1.25 m/m BC 346 style pick.

When I play at home, with friends, or to teach - I'll use:

000 12 fret (std scale), with lights and 1 m/m BC 346 style pick
or finger pick.

or National, 00 or 0 short scale with lights, finger picked.

Archtops are different again.

I used to play fingerstyle with a dreadnought guitar. But once tried an OM with it, I feel my right arm is more comfortable.

But many people play fingerstyle with a dreadnought, I think it's more about personal preference.
