Ryan Nightingale & Taylor 914ce Comparison Video
I thought it fun to have two very similar instruments both the same size shape and woods. One is a 2019 Ryan Nightingale in Bearclaw spruce and Rosewood and the other is a 2018 V Class Taylor 914ce in Spruce and Rosewood.
Here's a link to the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7aB..._JEY1pR4AaABAg

The Taylor 914ce sounds very good! The Ryan Nightingale does too. Neither one blows the other away and I'd be happy with either one. What are the prices for these guitars? Thanks.

Very cool comparison video. I think the Taylor holds its own pretty well against the Ryan.

The Ryan, particularly with the pick, sounded fuller and balanced to me. Always hard to tell of course, it would be interesting to hear what they sound like amplified assuming pickups are or will be installed.
Although they are similar in size, the differences in the way they are constructed really means it’s an apples and oranges comparison.

Cool comparison, Bobby. And, yes, the Taylor acquitted itself surprisingly well.

They both sounded really good in that comparison for sure. I love the design of those Ryan’s, but man they’re pricey.

I hear a big difference. The Ryan has a much deeper, richer tone fingerstyle and when strummed, it reverberates and almost sounds like a 12 string. It has more clarity and sustain. The difference would probably sound much greater when played acoustically instead of into a microphone. The Ryan sounds similar to my Goodall Standard, deep, full rich. Sorry Taylor fans.

The Ryan was the better sounding guitar by a wide margin to me, and it should be.
It's not a knock on the Taylor to come up short against a 10K Ryan acoustic guitar. Thanks for the comparison!

no comparison at all. The Taylor was tight and just didnt have it. The Ryan was rich in comparison.

Thanks for the video comparison. The Ryan sounds more robust than the Taylor, but Taylors have a smooth top end that doesn't seem evident in the video. It appears you are using just one mic in front of the sound hole, is this correct?
What file format is the sound? MP3 (192, 320?) or Wav?

I don't know that the Ryan sounds better per se'...it sounds different, the two guitars are voiced for very different sonic targets. The Ryan is a prime example of the "modern wide and open" voice tone and timbre. The V Braced Taylor is a much more fundamental and controlled voice, oddly a lot more in the vintage Martin vein. I thought that the Taylor sounded better than the Ryan when strummed and flatpicked, as I heard the Ryan's almost sub-woofer like bass response as kind of overpowering the mid's and trebles when strummed and flatpicked. Fingerpicked in the modern fingerstyle, the Ryan sounded much fuller, resonant and open to me, and would be awesome on Ed Gerhard style of play and songs...BUT...it would not work well for Ragtime or Blues style or simple Woody Guthrie type folks song fingerpicking where the clarity and balance of the Taylor would work better...and...the Taylor would be a MUCH better sounding guitar for a singer to work their voice with, as you could keep the Taylor's well controlled/balanced overall tone "behind" your voice with so much less effort. For a 5K difference in cost, the Taylor hangs...within it's own tonal design...quite well. What would be interesting to hear would be this Ryan against a Taylor 914 that was one of the Andy Powers re-voiced X Bracing models that came out just a couple of years before the new V Class bracing. Those Andy Powers performance X bracing models of the 8 and 9 and PS series Taylors are super full and lush sounding, very much in the Ryan and Goodall style of voice, so comparing one of those to this Ryan would be very very interesting...especially at the price difference. duff Be A Player...Not A Polisher Last edited by mcduffnw; 06-13-2020 at 11:00 PM. |

Not that I'm a fan boy of Taylors, but if you record with just one mic in front of the sound hole, the guitar with more bass will come off as louder and people generally like the louder guitar better in comparisons like this.
Just because I can only see one mic though in the video doesn't mean there is only one, but putting a mic in front of the sound hole is biasing the recording in favor of the guitar with more bass.
