Default What is it that makes male rockers of a certain age

decide to put on a tux and sing standards?

They're almost never any good at it.

My best guess is that many rockers grew up on that and other music before they headed down the rock lifestyle and music in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Likely, nostalgic affection for that music still lingers within them and because they maintain a presence in the music scene, they decide to see if they can do it and if it will be well received. Their renditions aren’t really to my taste, but I have no problem with them delving into any music they desire. All the power to them. They have their fans for that. I can choose to listen, or not. Mostly not.

,

They do it when they can't sing their old songs anymore.

And then there's guys like this who you might never expect (but if you're a fan of his shows, maybe not so surprising) who are actually good at it.

Carly did it way before all of them - 42 years ago, one of my favorite albums of all time.

She even looks better than all of them in a tux!

We’re all familiar with the phrase, “putting lipstick on a pig”. This is the real life example….

I'm not sure I understand. Before the rockers did it there were plenty of others. Even in the age where standards were, well, the standard, you had folks who tried to sing 'em that couldn't and some of those were aging pro singers to begin with.

It happened in reverse, too: I remember in the ‘70s, plenty of the now-old crooners who sang those standards released versions of rock songs in a desperate attempt to remain relevant. Fail. Very few people can pull off this trick. One who did, and has remained hip and relevant IMO, is Tom Jones. He can basically sing anything, with authority and without looking ridiculous. He gets it.

I think it's a recognition of how good some of this old music was and still is. I agree that it rarely works well. And it doesn't seem to work well going the other way, either.

I also think that everyone is looking for a way somehow to renew their music career.

I grew up with and love that music. If I could get gigs around here playing standards, I would. Throw stones if it pleases you

Is this really a 'thing'? I can barely bring any examples to mind. I remember David Lee Roth doing "That's Life," but it was parody, and he didn't even wear a tux, as far as I can remember.
