Default Build thread - Tony Klassen 14-fret Larson braced 00 for my 60th B-day

The superbly talented luthier, Tony Klassen ... ARK New Era Guitars .. is building me a 60th birthday guitar. This will be a Grand Concert (00) sized guitar, 14 frets, all hide glue .... with Honduran Rosewood (D. Stevensonii) .. Red Spruce top .. Red Spruce and HRW laminated Larson top bracing .. amber trim ..and chocolate top. The top and body wood was obtained from John Griffin at Old Standard Wood.

My second custom guitar from Tony ... some pics (will update as the build progresses):

Really like the fine, straight-grained HRW sides (below).. reminds me of Brazilian RW from back in the day ...

Nice Red Spruce here ...

Stay tuned ....

Hi Scott ... good to meet you, and good of you to reply. I'm told the body is finished and the neck is being carved. If my first Larson style guitar is a harbinger, I expect this one to follow the small package = big sound descriptor .. with the trademark sweet trebles that hang-in-the-air.

To Haans and Clinchriver ... thanks for checking in. I get the impression that folks here don't appreciate or know much about the history and exceptional nature of the guitars built by the Larson brothers. Modern .. new age style guitars seem to be more persuasive on this forum. I'm glad .. in a way, but happy to know that a handful of builders have dedicated themselves to making fine guitars in the Larson tradition.

For the heck of it ... while waiting for new pics, here's a photo of my first guitar from Tony Klassen ..a 12 fret Maurer in Red Spruce and Mahogany, with maple neck:

Seems to be about it Maurerfan...
Afterall, this is a big Taylor site...questionable how many folks know what a Larson is, and then most "custom guitars" follow the Martin or SJ style moulds, most don't care for the old time look, but want the undyed woods, and Gawd, NONE of that "plastic" binding!
Love the look of that first photo!!! Tony makes some fine lookin' guitars.

Well I for one really appreciate the look of your Ark guitars... the body shape and size on this 00 are just my thing and the "staining/dying" on your top looks wonderful. I'll admit to knowing absolutely nothing about Larson style guitars but feel sure this build will turn out to be a cracker. All the best Berf

Mr. Brentrup, I've visited your site on a number of occasions ..we may yet have a discussion.

Berf .. a good place to browse and learn about the exceptional guitars built by the two brothers is here:

The final finish coats are curing and will be buffed out next week. For those who are familiar with the rare vintage Larson Chocolate Tops... Tony Klassen has really nailed that honey brown tint .. and the ambered trim also brings it all together (see previous pic update for comparison):

Default Sept 4th update

The guitar will ship Wednesday... here's a couple updated picks w/ neck on. As I wanted .. a warm, rich looking, simple aeathetic consistent with the aesthetic of the rare chocolate-top Larson builds of the pre-war era.
