Yes, it's a real bear to bend. Hard to see what direction the grain goes because it's so dark. Plus it's really brittle, even before you work harden it with heat. Helps to thin it, but even then it's difficult. Looks nice though.

It looks amazing with the thin lighter strip setting it off. Is that holly?

If you mean the light strips that run with the binding round the sides and back of the guitar, the ones on the back are maple, and the lamination on the binding on the sides is basswood. The tapered stripe up the middle of the back is sapwood, but still Honduras Rosewood.

Update time for this build. In the last few days I've shaped the peghead, drilled and mocked up for the Waverly tuning machines and inlaid the brown lip oyster logo. Fingerboard is up next.

Chris.

Chris, the guitar on your home page is unbelievable! Is that the black walnut and engelmann spruce? Do you have more pictures of it?

This one is almost ready for finish. Still need to install the frets and locate the bridge, but getting close.

Chris--nice clean work, handsome choices too.
I quite like your peghead shape.

Thanks Steve,

I'm happy with the peghead shape, although it's really a bear to bind.

Chris.

And off to finish it goes. I'm anxious to see the Honduras RW under finish.

Chris.

I concur with Steve. The peghead shape is very nice. Has an archtop feel to it. Johnny likey.

Thanks everyone for your kind words.

It's time for a long overdue update to this thread. The final coat of finish is on. Soon I'll have it back for final assembly. Then we get to hear it for the first time, always my favorite part of the build.

Chris.

Default Ready to go to her new home

Well, this guitar is all ready to head out to her new home. We've been calling her Madeline because the sap wood down the center of the back made me think of Madeline Kahn's hair in Young Frankenstein. I'm really happy with the tone produced by the Honduras Rosewood/Engelmann spruce combination.

Here are a few pics:
