Default Recording question

I have a Boss BR8 for recording basic tracks. When I mix the tracks down to CD I put the stereo signal from the BR8 through a Focus Penta compression unit. When I do this the input signal to the compressor is low, but increasing the output from the BR8 causes the sound to distort. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can improve the signal from the BR8 into the compressor?

I'm no expert, but I run it through my preamp first, then my compressor, then into my board. Maybe someone who knows more than I will tell you differently. But the sound comes out really good that way. Here's a good site for basic recording: http://www.homerecording.com/
