Default Acoustic Jazz recommendations:

I'm looking for great acoustic jazz guitar albums. I've heard some of eric skye's stuff and that's what i'm leaning towards. I like instrumental acoustic jazz. Do you guys know any artists that would fall into this category? I like those jazzy albums that can be played at coffee shops or bars. I sure hope i'm being specific enough.

Check out The David Grisman Quintet and Hot Dawg by David Grisman. VERY tasty stuff. On the web links, scroll down and you can listen to samples - the samples may not feature much of Tony Rice's guitar playing, but he is all over these albums and very hot.

Start at the beginning....The Quintet of the Hot Club....Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli....the recordings from 1935 are the best.....

Thanks, 815C for the suggestions on Dave Grisman - I've been looking for some of his best "dawg" music w/ Tony Rice, etc., & all I ever see in the stores is the duet stuff w/ Jerry Garcia - not the same.

Birelli Lagrene is a great acoustic guitar jazz player. I have a CD by a flamenco/jazz style guy named Jesse Cook - "Gravity", that's really nice.

Charlie Byrd. He played jazz guitar on a classical guitar, a Hauser I believe. Check out his album with Stan Getz from the 60s, I think it is called Jazz Samba.

He also put out a cool album in 1994 entitled 'Au Courant' - all that is on that album is bass, guitar , and VIBES!! I can't remember if there are drums or not, maybe there are. But it is a great CD.

Joe Pass - Songs For Ellen CD (solo nylon string guitar)
Earl Klugh - Solo Guitar CD (solo nylon string guitar)
Earl Klugh - Trio Vol. 1 CD (nylon string w/bass & drums)
Charlie Byrd - any album (as mentioned above)
Pat Metheny - Solo Baritone Guitar (I think that's the title. I saw it at the store yesterday, but did not buy it. Looked interesting.)
Laurindo Almeida - any album (mainly latin jazz played on nylon string guitar)
Jeff Linsky - any album (latin jazz played on a requinto (sp?) which is a small 6 string nylon)
Baden Powell - any album (latin jazz on nylon string guitar)

Good luck and be sure to write some reviews of the albums you end up getting.

P.S. Welcome to the forum, Stan!

The Pat Metheny album is called, "One Quiet Night" and is pretty good.

Also check out our own Eric Skye's CD. Great solo renditions of jazz standards. You can hear samples and order the CD on his website, www.ericskye.com ...

Hey Stan,

One more recommendation for you. Joe Pass "Virtuoso No. 4." It's a two CD set and contains a total of 21 tracks of solo jazz guitar played on acoustic guitar. I'm listening to it right now. I've heard Joe Pass 1 gajillion times and had seen him in person probably a half a dozen times. I'm still floored everytime I hear his recordings.

Best regards,
