Golf : Putting : Flag Left in the Hole
Never noticed this until recently.
When the ball is on the green, sometimes I see the flag pole left in the hole. Is this now an option? Leave the pole in the hole or take it out? Why the change? Is there a difference? J |

Thanks for the link.
I guess that explains the rule change, just wondering why it was made. Was it made to speed up play? Or one of those, rule changes just to make rule changes to keep the rule change committee employed? J |

Pretty much.
You could always leave the flagsick in, actually. They just removed the penalty for hitting it with the ball if you did leave it in.

It does speed things up. The pros usually take it out, though.

At courses in MI you aren't supposed to touch the flag or rakes (in bunkers) due to the virus. No water coolers or ball washers on the course either.

Same here and at my folks in WA state too.

I didn’t read the link, but leaving the flag in and not touching it, same for no sand trap rakes as I understand it, may be to avoid multiple player’s handling in these times of pandemic.

Keeping the flag in due to Covid, is presently a public safety precaution. But the rule was changed to allowing it in prior to the pandemic. It was in effect last season. It is meant to speed up play. Most pros go old school and pull it.

in the olde days, you left the pin in when it "favored" you...like downhill putts or chips (think: backstop).
my understanding is the rule change is meant to speed up play (in the works prior to covid issues). there is, of course, research: https://golf.com/news/tournaments/da...en-you-putt-2/ |

Yes, made long before any Covid, was completely done to speed up play. There are many pros who leave it in and many who take it out. Often left in on longer putts and taken out on shorter ones. Research seems to say that the odds are better to make the putt if the flag is left in, but I think it was a hard change for some to try it.

I could be wrong, but I’ve always thought rules required that the pin must be removed for all play with balls on the green.

Yes, prior to 2019. But the PGA changed the rule to allow the pin to stay in.

Any thing to speed up pace of play is a good thing.
Personally, i love the C-19 “Foam in the hole” option. No touching and easier to get the ball out after those pesky third putts.
