Tennessee Whiskey Chris Stapleton
Hi ,
I am new to the forum so i hope I am asking in the right area but i am trying to learn the intro to Chris Stapleton Tennessee Whiskey. Every video I find shows mid way through doing a 3 slide part but if you watch chris do it that is not what he is doing in that part. I cant find a video clear enough of him to figure out what exactly he is doing but I would to figure it out if anyone knows. I prefer to not do the 3 back to back slides on my acoustic just due to the string sound that is hard to get rid of so I would love to know what he is doing in that part if anyone can tell me ? Or can tell me where to find the actual breakdown of what he does . Thank you |

Sorry...I can't help you. Do love the song. Have you tried "Ultimate Guitars Tabs.com"?

If I’m remembering the part correctly, the 3 back to back slides are from 2nd fret to 4th fret on the A string?
Play it as a hammer on instead for no string slide noise. |

Songs in A and he's doing the lead using the major pentatonic scale in the F # position ( relative minor )
Quite easy if you know the scale.

Wow, quite possibly the simplest piece of lead guitar I've ever transcribed!
Code:
---------|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------| ---------|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------| ---------|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------| ---------|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------| -------0-|2/4------------------------/4-\2--0--|2/4\2-------------------------/4-/4--| -0--2----|-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------| 4 . . |1 . . 2 . . 3 . . 4 . . |1 . . 2 . . 3 . . 4 . . |------------------------------------|------ |------------------------------------|------ |------------------------------------|------- |------------------------------------|------- |4-\2----------------------/4-\2--0--|0----- |------------------------------------|------- 1 . . 2 . . 3 . . 4 . . |1 Apart from those first 3 notes (the first 0-2 could be a hammer-on) and the last couple, it's all slides. You see it really clearly in this video By the way, this song is really I'd Rather Go Blind with different words: I hope Stapleton pays royalties...

Yeah, its a simple intro in A in6/8 time.
Same as the original, or Christine McVie or Chicken shack's version. You play whatever intro you like. E, F#, A, C#, C#,B,A, C#,B,A etc. I'ts just the notes in the A scale and also the melody line. Am I missing something?

This is how my playing partner Lee does it. We perform this live and I'm pleased to say we always get compliments on our performance. Obviously, I ain't no Chris Stapleton but "hey, I'm no doorknob either." With apologies to Rodney Dangerfield

Thank you. I am still a bit of a beginner so I am sure my question sounded dumb to some of you but hey I am trying and thats all I can do lol. I could play it the way I see everyone else playing it with the slides I was just confused about the middle part of 3 slides since I see that is not what Chris is actually doing but everywhere I search tells me to play the 3 slides. Anyways thank you .

Dean Dillon, the co-writer of "Tennessee Whiskey" is one of my favorite songwriters...
Etta James has always been one of my favorite singers, and I've heard "I'd Rather Go Blind" too many times to count... Amazed I've never noticed the similarities between the two songs...

I feel the same as you probably do - this is just a little set of standard A major pentatonic phrases. It only just occurred to me that - as well as I'd Rather Go Blind - it shares stuff with Albatross too: - from 0:14. It's not exactly the same thing, but it is the same thing. Right?
