11 gauge strings are for electrics. Time to man up!

This is the right concept. If the nut is cut for a 12ga string the 11 string will sit lower in the nut and that could cause your problem.

No, it won't! The bottom of the slot is the bottom of the slot - that's as low as any string will go. Provided that the slot is wide enough, strings of any gauge will sit at exactly the same height - i.e. the height of the bottom of the slot. Buzzing comes from the bottom of the string contacting the top of the fret, and no matter what gauge the string is, the bottom of the string will be at exactly the same height above the offending fret.

Lighter strings may be more prone to buzzing than heavier gauges, but that's due to the reduced tension of the lighter string allowing it to vibrate in a wider arc, nothing to do with sitting 'deeper' in the slot. And it's possible that's the reason the OP is using excessive relief in an attempt to mitigate the buzziness of extra-light strings?

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

No, it won't The bottom of the nut slot is the same height above the fingerboard, regardless of the string gauge.

If you were going from a .012 to a .013, things might be different, as the slot might not be wide enough to let the string hit bottom - but are we really talking about tolerances of a thou?
