The Johnny Cash Show...
Gettv is showing those old shows on Sunday nights. I watched them as a kid, he always had the coolest guest.
Dylan, Arlo, last Sunday was Creedence, but they looked to be lip syncing. Roy Orbison was live. What a guy and performer Johnny was. |

Yes indeed! My all-time favorite artist. I have a 2 DVD set of performances from the tv show. His albums got a lot of play in our house when I was growing up. I got to see him live twice and I have covered more than 230 of his songs.

This is superior musical material:
Derek & The Dominos on "The Johnny Cash Show," originally telecast in the US on January 6, 1971 (taped on November 5, 1970, at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennesee). The band plays "It's Too Late;" and then, Clapton teams up with JC and Carl Perkins for "Matchbox." And, here's an outtake from that "Johnny Cash Show"--apparently not preserved on tape; audio, only. Derek & The Dominos play "Blues Power":

Didn't Norman Blake also play on the show?

Yes he did. He has black horn rim glasses. There is a YouTube where Johnny does a song and Norman plays four different instruments during the song.

I got to play a gig with Johnny Cash's grandson, Thomas Gabriel, who sounds a LOT like Johnny. I'm on electric guitar...

I have a "Best of" set on DVD. Lots of great stuff, but my very favorite is this, Johnny and Tony Joe White just hanging out & having a blast -

I saw a clip from that show while falling down the YouTube rabbit hole recenty. John and Roy Clark doing Folsum Prison Blues. They were having fun, even when Roy forgot the lyrics to the 2nd verse. But then again he made up for it by playing slide on his guitar with a beer bottle, the back of JC's boot, and the mic stand and other things that I cant remember. Cool video.

Jonny pretends to be playing ... but he's not playing the chords. Is this called finger-syncing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV9GxtDao9g |

Thanks to Inyo for Blues Power. I was glued to the tube that night in 71. For many yanks, it was the first time we saw Clapton on the tube!
I wonder how much I was influenced by the Cash show. Took me a while to warm to The Man in Black, but his guests were cutting edge.

However the show was LIVE and it was obvious Johnny had no clue how to play that song, but he always was a Great performer and kept his cool. He was questionably on drugs during MANY of those shows and his professionalism and experience is really something to behold for the times. He's a joy to watch under pressure ! |
