Huh - where to start ?

I guess I'd say The Circle Game by Tom Rush because that was the guy who really turned me onto singer-songwriters.

He also made me aware of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, all of whom led me to others.

I discovered Tim Buckley and Tim Hardin.

Later, I discovered Guy Clark, and have every album he ever made (and a fair few he didn't). I became a serious collector of Texas based singer songwriters.

Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, not all known for their writing, but for their interpretation of the songs of others.

More recently, it has been Mandolin Orange, Cahalen Morrison & Eli West, Pharis and Jason Romero, and others.

Current: Particularly like Andrew Marlin who writes most songs for Mandolin Orange.

Since mandolin orange has been mentioned, I'll throw the Avett Brothers in the ring as well.

Greg Brown's Further In is remarkable.
Blood on the Tracks ... In sports we'd call this the record that will never be broken
Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws Bruce Cockburn's first masterpiece.
Townes Van Zandt self titled second album. Some of his very best songwriting

Tom Rush released Voices this year. My favorite singer songwriter album since Further In.

If Bob Marley can be included here, he was certainly a singer songwriter, I'll add Natty Dread

.
I may be wrong but I really don't think Joni Mitchell did interpretations of songs of others.

I agree with Mr Paul on Bruce Cockburn and Blood on the Tracks.

Other notables Gregory Alan Isakov -This Empty Northern Hemisphere
Ron Sexsmith- Retriever
