Default EBay Buyer Cancellation Question

A person bought my guitar on EBay. The moneys in my PayPal account. I haven't boxed up the guitar yet to ship it. I have an email this morning stating that he wants to cancel. I don't know what to do here.

Here ya go. It's really straight-forward.

What are you selling? I'm looking.

Hi,

I seriously hate when things like that happen...

Here's the info from eBay... good luck:

"Buyer-requested cancellations
If a buyer has contacted you and asked you to cancel the order, they’ll need to file a cancellation request with you.

Once you receive their request, you’ll have 3 business days to approve or decline it. If you approve it and the buyer has already paid for the item, you have 10 business days to issue them a refund. If you haven’t refunded them within 10 business days, they can file a claim through the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

When you refund a buyer after accepting their request to cancel a transaction, we'll automatically relist your item for you. If you don’t want your item to be relisted, simply uncheck the Relist item after cancellation box when issuing the refund.

When a buyer cancels a transaction, they can't leave negative or neutral feedback or low detailed seller ratings for you."

I get that you want the sale but you should just let it go and refund the buyer. I would make sure any non refundable PayPal fees aren’t refunded though. At least you didn’t already ship it.

Additional Note: I believe you need to cancel through the method I indicated.. via eBay. If you refund directly from Paypal I do not believe it will automatically refund your eBay fee.

...and, yes, you need to refund or the buyer will just send the guitar back, most likely, and you will have to refund anyways...

It's always a drag, but karma usually dictates that I should refund the money. Paypal will automatically adjust any fees you incurred as the seller, so the only downside for you is having to relist and finding the right buyer.

Good point regarding the eBay fees. I'm not sure so I'd follow the eBay route as mont_sky said.

Yep, what others have said here. At least you haven’t already shipped the guitar. Refund them and be done with them. eBay is pain because it always sides with the buyer. If you don’t refund them, they’ll file a claim, and eBay will side with them automatically.

There's some good advice already given - I'd just add that if the email you received was direct from the buyer and not a cancellation notice from eBay, have the buyer use the proper eBay channels as already described to protect yourself.

My guess is you and the buyer didn't have much prior conversation about the guitar before he/she clicked "Buy It Now" and so it sounds like he/she has a case of buyer's remorse. I think we've all had second thoughts after a purchase, not necessarily with guitars, but with other things.

You had likely said No Returns in your ad but personally, since the guitar has not yet shipped, I would take a deep breath, return the money and re-list it.

Cancel the sale. Any other choice is asking for problems such as the guitar leaving your home in good condition but arriving at buyer's address "damaged."

A good thought. I didn't think of this one. Another good reason to cancel the sale and return the money.

You will not be refunded the PayPal fee 2.9%. I had this Hales to me and I told the buyer I couldn’t accept the change because of the fee. A change of mind can cost you $50. I would ship it.

Wow that's rough. Can you make cancellation conditional on deducting the free from refund?

Good question. This is probably what the OP should do if he/she can.
