Who Start's At One
Just because it it string 1 Is that where you start to tune?
I can't tell you how many players I know, that still to this day tune this way. And wonder why they have such a hard time getting in tune. |

??? no, no absolute pattern but the highest tension string is the best on to start with, so logically, G,D,A, Bass E, top e, then B.
However I am not always logical.

I've always started at six. Didn't even know it was legal to start at one.

I'm a top to bottom guy. If this doesn't make sense then I'm a fat to skinny guy.

I really had to think about this - whatever I do is just pure reflex after all these years.
I generally start at 1, and work across to 6, followed by any touch-up that’s needed. I always use an electronic tuner of some description. I can’t see why starting at 1 would make someone more prone to tuning issues than starting anywhere else, which is the OP’s premise. Incidentally, going 1->6, skinny to fat, for me has always been top-to-bottom. We haven’t had a good forum bicker about that for a very long time

Seriously, this is an issue? I would not demean anyone no matter what string they started on. And, why would it make a difference in tuning.

My guitar was in tune when I bought it. I haven’t had to worry about tuning it.

I've always started with the 6th string.

Always felt like the 6th string tension affected the other strings a little more, takes fewer passes if you start on 6. My hypothesis anyway.

I found 12-strings were always better to tune from the top (bass) down to the thinner bottom (treble) strings.
Doing it the other way always seemed to pull the trebles back out of tune. Just seems natural now to tune the same way on all guitars.

I don't think it matters where you start as long as you back around and tune them again after you've tuned them the first time to make small adjustments.

You're supposed to tune these things?

Mine was too....... it has grown out of tune over the years, but I just change my chord shapes to compensate for the change in tuning..... Have I been doing it wrong?
