Default My First Album: The Songs of Neil Matthew Fox

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and looking forward to checking out your music in Show and Tell.

Just posting to share my first album that came out on the 12th of September, The Songs of Neil Matthew Fox, available on all streaming platforms.

All songs were written by me and recorded in my pal's bedroom. It's very much inspired by 60s and 70s singer-songwriters and also my love for traditional folk, particularly Irish, Scottish and American.

I've only been playing guitar for two years so sadly you won't find much virtuosity in my guitar playing: I do hope that I do my songs justice though and if you like lyrically driven music like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen etc. plus more traditional acts like The Clancy Brothers it may well be up your street.

A wee song sample for a "cold November night".

Something more upbeat!

Ah, I forgot - a video for an outtake of one of the songs from the album, a dark biblical ballad (went with an earlier take in the end though).

Woohoo! Congratulations! It feels good (and a little scary) to put something like that out into the world, doesn't it?

I’ve a mixture of feelings in all honesty. I wasn’t planning on releasing an album whatsoever but my friend Angus Gibson who produced it encouraged me to get these songs recorded, and the more we put down the more I came over to his idea of me putting out an album. He put in a lot of work completely free of charge adding lead guitar, backing instruments, even designing the album art - very grateful for his hard work.

There’s a few things I kind of wish I had done differently. I really should have re-recorded Lay Your Brother Down in a different key and I think the track order could be improved. Still, I am glad I put it out there and the launch night was the most fun gig of my life, I had some great support acts who all joined in for some of my songs: Angus on backing vocals and electric, an excellent solo violinist who goes by the stage name SCeVIP and Rosie Smith, an excellent folk singer-songwriter. The crowd was brilliant.

I’m now working on a second album with Angus, something totally different to this one - very much Tom Waits and Nick Cave inspired. Here’s one of the songs that is finished, I write and sing the lyrics and leave the music to Angus.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to make such a huge reply! I think it’s only fair I include a link to Angus’s Bandcamp after mentioning him - I recommend Nineteen and Holy Once.

That's fantastic! Thanks for the details. I didn't do a release party for either of mine but I now have friends willing to help with the next one. Maybe soon, I'll get to release the next one with actual help.

PS: my albums are below but they aren't as professional as yours.

Sounds good to me! Well done on doing it all solo as well.

I definitely recommend the release party. Mine was a fairly small affair with a crowd of about 30-40 but playing to a crowd consisting mainly of friends, friends of friends and those who had seen me live already and liked my stuff was a really great experience, it was a warm and convivial atmosphere you seldom get at open mics which can be quite competitive sadly. Also, it’s not easy getting people to listen to your stuff online (so thank you all here for doing so!), a release gig just makes it all that more tangible.

One more video, a short and sweet song that eventually made it on the album, though this is a simple take recorded on my Zoom H2N.
