Capos for custom guitars...
I've tried a number of capos over the years and the one that I have found to be the best (at a reasonable price) is the Paige capo. Lovely little thing, light and simple and the guitar sounds good up the neck with it.
I have recently acquired a Sobell New World which (although it doesn't feel it) has a significantly wider neck than my other guitars (slightly over 57mm at the nut). I was struggling to fit the capo one evening at about the 5th fret and realised...erm...well you know. Anyway, what would you guys suggest for a capo for slightly wider (but shallow) necks that isn't going to cost a fortune?

Do you mean 47mm at nut? 57mm seems a little extreme.
I make my own guitars with a 48mm nut to suit my preference an I find the G7th capo works fine all up the neck. |

Check out the specifications for the D'Addario saddle capo, it might work for you.

D'addario
I have been able to use my preferred D'addario NS just fine on my LKSM 12 and it worked on my recent Bob Brozman Bari with a 1.91" Nut .
Cheap, light, and seems to fit every steel string. They make them for flat/classical, too. Very Easy to carve out a 5 string capo too! I do a LOT in Drop D, and have modified a bunch of these. Does take a couple seconds to adjust but very easy to do so. Have fun Paul

Shubb Capos Are Still Great
Aloha,
Most veteran giggers still use Shubb capos. They are very well-made, safe, durable & easy to put on. The standard, IMO. I recommend the S3 12-string Model for radiussed fingerboards: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...SAAEgLGEfD_BwE & the S2 Classical Model for un-radiussed fingerboards. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/det...SAAEgLqffD_BwE Both Shubb models work very well for wider steel-string necks, both 6 & 12 strings. They are under $20 - a great value. And they look good. I always recommended Shubb capos for use on my custom guitars when I was building. I also always used Shubb capos for over 50 years of gigging. They never failed. And, the nut widths on my personal guitars were 2-1/8" wide - Huge Hands. I played almost every night & I still use Shubbs from the late 80's! A Hui Hou! alohachris Last edited by alohachris; 10-02-2019 at 11:23 PM. |
