How high was the input set at? This is what, theoretically, should make a tonal difference. The output is to adjust so you aren't just pummeling whatever you send it to. If you use a low input/gain setting you wouldn't expect much difference in tone, is my understanding.

That's exactly the order I use mine in. Mostly, though I find I don't need it as I use mikes, not pickups. The one guitar I have with a p/u can use it though.
