What's the story with these Amazon "deals"?

I was on the Canadian site of Amazon (amazon.ca) looking at a few things when I came across several that were outrageously high priced. I reported them to Amazon but I wonder what the story is with these "dealers". Some kind of money laundering trick? A scam of some sort? Scammers fishing for poor suckers? Whatever it is, they sure give Amazon a bad name.

For instance.
Roland SPD-One. Street $279. Amazon $690.
Radial Headlight. Street $199. Amazon $531.
Schatten HFN. Street $139. Amazon $371.

What's with these and why are they on Amazon in the first place?

i see similar stuff on Uk Ebay. and Amazon - but I'm afraid i don't buy much from amazon now as they keep trying to foist "prime" on me.
Anyway, amazon is increasingly disliked in the UK.

You will find that sort of thing on the USA version, too. It is called catch the dummy.

Seriously, I see it when an item is being replaced or discontinued or in very short supply.

I have it hand if you want it this is the price.

On the other hand, every great once in a while you'll see something at a ridiculously low price. I'd been shopping for a new carbon road bike last year, and one of the models I was searching popped up on my sidebar when on another site. I couldn't believe the price I was seeing (literally half of street price at the time, which was already discounted from "normal") I clicked on it and bought it, and when I went back, it was listed almost 1000.00 higher. Just got really lucky!

Anyone can sell threw amazon - for any price they want to charge -
Ebay ( or fleabay as its commonly called ) does about the same thing .
Sad to say their are people in this world dumb enough to buy one every now and then - as usual -- buyer beware !

On Amazon the other day I saw deodorant selling for $7-$7.50 each from one sell @ $45!! I guess they hope to catch a buyer who is not paying attention and reads it as '$4.50'.

Yes Amazon vendors especially the ones that Amazon is not selling directly themselves can indeed ask any price they want .

And as far as the high priced items, it is probably the other side of the Walmart low price sales approach coin , (that relies on people only being concerned with "Always the lowest price" and not so much with quality..
Where this is targeted towards people either only being concerned with the convenience of online ordering, or as others have suggested are uninformed .

yea, some amazon venders are a rip off, i dont bother with it and certainly wont pay a yearly year, sears is like that too with 3rd party vendors- i remember looking for a 6" telescope tube, astronomy stores were around $300-350, sears had it for $900- gawd
