Default TRIAD ORBIT

So we've talked about who likes what microphones.

Has anyone tried out these stands, and mic mounts?

When I built my studio, I outfitted it entirely with these stands/wall mounts, and mic mounts..

Today, for my acoustic rig. I use a small base T-1 with extensions and full-sized boom. With an I-pad mount.

Small footprint, and still capable holding Telefunken M-80 microphone with boom at full extension, as well as the weight of my I-pad. With no tipping.

A bit heavy to move around. But solid as a rock.

The quick connect mic attachments, and added articulation, makes positioning a breeze.

A little pricey. But in today's market, what isn't?

I just took a look at the specs on a couple. Which one are you using? The ones I looked at seemed on the light side.

Just curious if you know whether or not the TO quick-change mic holders will work with LatchLake holders? Are those universal fit, or proprietary?

Neither of those stands are exactly for sale in the Wal-Mart bargain bins, so I want to make sure they play well together, if possible. Otherwise, I'll stick with LL, which I already have.

I use the T.O. quick releases. In fact I bought a six pack of them. Highly recommend them. However, they are a bit harder to insert because of their tighter tolerances. Just means that it will take you a few seconds more to attach. Regardless of being better made with stronger joints, there will still be a tiny bit of wiggle between the two parts. Effectively this makes no difference once the mic is attached.

I use it on a Latch lake boom arm. It comes with a 5/8 thread, but you can purchase an additional 3/8 adapter. I forget which I had to use with Latch Lake.

They are so much more sturdy then two other brands I owned. The other brands are easier to make a mistake, and not fully engage to a lock position. Or they are prone to fail over long term use. But not the T.O. quick releases. They are super strong.

I not only use it to disconnect the mic, but I also use it between the boom arm and the mic stand. Since my living room is my recording studio, this allows me to take off the boom arms and store the stand and boom arms in another area for quick conversion from living room to recording studio.

As easy as it is to connect and disconnect the mic stands...I still wish I had a dedicated area for recording and could leave my stands up all the time. Even quick disconnects still take time.

Here you can see that I am using T.O's on all three mic stands. Center stand is a Latch Lake Boom arm. In this photo I have place two of the stands behind the Gobo's. A little hard to see, but you can also see in the far left stand a T.O. Quick release between the boom arm and the stand.

Here is one more picture showing the other side of the screen. The two mic stands both have T.O.'s at the juncture of the boom arms and Stand. Certainly not necessary for most people. But in my situation it allows quicker and easier take down and back up.

Yes, those are great stands. I also like Latch Lake stands. Both are built to last a lifetime (or 2).

Thanks AD,
I see now. Looks like they work with any stand, so long as the two release ends are TO. Duh!

Kev,
How do you like your LL swivel mount on your boom arm? I was considering adding one, but I think some quick release mounts would see more use.

I have not used any quick release type so just guessing I guess it is likely 6'es with the on advantage of the quick release (if it's a universal 5/8 screw mount is it can be used on other types of stands

With the swivel mount I can roll it up or down at any angle and since I can rotate the last boom leg 360 and then with the the shock mounts angle adjustment I can get any position I want.

What are the gobos that you're using here?

Here they are: Mini Gobo's
https://realtraps.com/p_minigobo.htm
https://realtraps.com/products.htm

I consulted with Doug Young on these, as well as the controversial designer and owner of the company, Ethan. The concept with these is based totally on acoustic guitar. The theory is: For Gobo's you are blocking the sound first. And for Acoustic Guitar you do not need thicker to block anything below 100 hz for acoustic guitar. Quote: " One inch of 703 mounted on the wall absorbs only 28% at 125Hz, while 1 inch with 16 inches of air behind it absorbs 68%."

I needed something lightweight that I could move and tear down easily. As right now, my recording room is my living room. The advantage of my area is that I have an open wall between the Living Room and Den. As well as there is a extension to the living room. Thus the room is not totally square and the room itself sounds reasonable....but not great.

My knowledge of acoustics is next to zero. So I can not vouch on how well they work. But I do love how I can easily take them up and move them around.

However, with the continual discussion on acoustics( and the fact that I am now ready to start working on my album) I have decided to make & buy more panels. But this time thicker and placed in the recommended areas of my room. Not Gobo's. Probably be purchasing a combination of do it your self panels...as well as some premade from Gik.

Gik has free consulting. You send them pictures of your room and they will tell you what you need.

Maybe we can play a game?....I will send them the pictures & diagrams to them hopefully later today....And in the meantime...we can all guess what they will recommend and where they will tell me to place them? I start a new thread soon. Maybe later today.

I will be interested in not only there opinion...but your guys opinions as well. As sometimes the layman comes up with interesting notations.

Thanks for the links. Still, I wasn’t able to crack the naming code. I don’t see anything called a Mini Gobo, except where they list the hinge price. Otherwise they’re called mini traps (without the hinges). But they only list 4” thick ones, and yours are thinner. I’m probably just missing the obvious.

Anyway, a question: how do you like the 4’ height? I’ve been thinking of standing mine up about a foot above the floor to put the guitar in the middle.

Finally, those lift-off hinges are exactly what I’d like to use on mine!

You must have hit the second link only...as the first link is the Mini Gobo Series
REALTRAPS MINIGOBO SERIES

https://realtraps.com/p_minigobo.htm

However, I am going to have to call them and find out if I have the Mini Gobo's or the Micro Traps

https://realtraps.com/p_microtrap.htm

If you scroll down the page...they show that with Micro Traps you can lift them up via Microphone stands for a vocal booth.

The lift off hinges work very well. When you are taking down so easy to take apart. However, there are always drawbacks to any system chosen. the Draw back is when you want to move them a little distance...they can come apart easily. They will not come apart just standing though.

For Acoustic guitar if you have a normal size seat....I believe the guitar will be close to the middle of the 4 ft stand. You can see via the previous picture where I have placed the tips of the boom arms. I have also contemplated raising them a foot for the exact same reason.

Micro traps! OK.

Hinges are on the way. First step in the journey.
