Default Medium strings on a Taylor 214ce...

Switching from the stock lights to HD Lights made such a big difference in the sound and tone on my Taylor 214ce that I am thinking about trying a set of mediums on it. Will I need to take it to a luthier for any kind of adjustments before I try this?

Are medium strings even an option on this guitar??

Default Medium strings on a Taylor 214ce...

I have mediums on my 214ce and I like them better than lights. A little more volume but not quite as bright. I may have adjusted the truss rod, I don't recall.

When changing string sizes, really the only adjustments that might need to be made are:

1) if you switch to heavier strings, the nut slots MAY need to be widened slightly, if they were cut specifically for narrower strings and don't have enough width for the wider strings without pinching in the nut slots.

2) Switching between heavier and lighter strings will require a slight truss rod adjustment. When switching to heavier strings, the neck will have greater bow so the truss rod should be tightened slightly. The converse is true when switching to lighter strings.

I think it is a good idea for all guitar owners to understand truss rods and proper neck bow. It is really not that difficult at all, and truss rods sometimes need to be adjusted seasonally (with greater and lower humidity - think celery, flompy when dry, stiff and straight when filled with water). Taylors, in my experience, are particularly sensitive to seasonal changes.

So...I should put on the medium strings, tune the guitar, and then turn the truss rod clockwise about an eight of a turn ?

The mediums are awesome! Got a set of D'Addario EXP17 coated phosphor bronze strings.

Looks like no truss rod adjustment is needed so far.
