Because of the very low price, I settled on the Dean. I'm not certain it was the best move.
I have to press down very hard to not get a bit of rattle. I will probably need to play a few higher models at the store to see if it is just the entry level or it is me. It just does not have a clean sound to it. On a brighter note, I continue to learn with the DP -004 and I am wondering how many of the tips from the DVD tutorial most here already know, but were new to me. For example: The internal mics are very sensitive and make for nice, clear recording. The instructor shows the difference in recording while having the DP 004 (or 008) sit on a wooden table versus perched on a pillow: I did not know how much nicer the sound would be! There are a lot of these little tips that are new to me, and if helpful here, I would be glad to start posting them upon reviewing the DVD, though I think its just me: you all likely know these things!

Seamus,
Not sure if it was this thread or another but, I think we may have discussed ABG's earlier. With bass being my primary instrument, I've owned several ABG's. Ovation, Fender and Washburn and it wasn't until I went fretless with tapewound strings that I was able to eliminate fret noise. If you have a return option, that would be my recommendation or....and never tried this myself so.....YMMV. Try a set of tapewounds on the fretted ABG. With my Michael Kelly fretless, I can dial up a tone pretty close to an upright bass.

That's one of the tricks that you have to learn how to play bass, I'm afraid to say that it may take few hours or even more to try to get the FEEL of it. And I think it's just like the other instruments that normally take years to be better left alone to master them.
It may looks so naively easy to play but sometimes looks are deceiving. I had a few chances to play ABG bass (Taylor) few years back and only few hours at the few local AGF gatherings without the problem you mentioned and I liked it too, but that could be the result of many years of my bass playing. You may need to adjust the action or the neck or who knows what? But I still say the Solid body electric bass may be the better choice to choose than ABG. Please don't take my opinion too seriously, it's just another opinion, that's all. I still hope this helps in some way

Thank you both for the replies. Based upon my description, would light strings be best?
I don't have an amp, and am plugging it directly into the Tascam DP 004, and don't need much volume; just a bit easier on my fingers! I appreciate the responses.

I say try some tapewounds. The lightest gauge you can find.
There are so many options......my Squire Vintage Modified fretless has flatwound chromes and the difference in tone is worlds apart from my ABG. Again.....it's a matter of opinion. Different tools to accomplish different tasks.

In terms of the buzz, noise, and ease of handling for a newbie, does this sound right? There are SO many to choose from, including nylon tapewounds (black) that I am not certain which might be the easiest to transition to. D'Addario Electric Bass Chromes Flat Wound Soft Long, .045 - .100, ECB81 OR black nylon tapewound that are .05 - .110?? PS: I do love the old school stand up acoustic bass sound On my Martin, I use light strings and sometimes even light specials...Martin FX yikes! too many choices! PPS I also found among reviewers for the DEAN bass that changing the strings was a great idea.

Maybe it would be a good idea to start a different thread to talk about guitar strings, recording bass, etc? It's getting a little off-topic, and a new/different thread would likely be more helpful for others who have similar questions about such topics but who wouldn't look for the information in a thread called "Tascam DP-004 help."

Blueser100....
I was thinking the same thing. Lots of good info being traded about here that others may benefit from if not for the somewhat "misleading" title.......

Agreed, and thank you for advice.
Regarding the Tascam, and home recorders in general, a number of reviewers wrote that they bought the Dean acoustic bass specifically for the purpose of home recording. (Many reported enjoying the Dean once they changed strings). It seems that there are a few of us who are enjoying multi track recording and wanted to add a bass behind the recordings. I had some fun with "When Did You Leave Heaven?" with vocals using the Tascam condenser mic with the DP 004. I recorded it once with the Condenser mic and once with the built in mic. The sound of both were similar but the condenser mic seemed to pick up less background noise. Although I live off a street, with the windows open, there is background noise of the occasional car passing by picked up by the internal mics. Due to the sticky warmth, I didn't want to close my windows, as I was just enjoying playing with the DP 004. I have been playing with settings and getting more comfortable. I even found a nice bass pattern to the above song.

This is a review of the DP 004, which is helpful but it is the comments that follow that have helpful hints on usage that is fitting with our thread:
