Default GoFundMe

Just read a story about a couple traveling the world posting all their adventures on Instagram. They did a GoFundMe earlier this year to help finance their lifestyle. Also, constantly see GoFundMe for illnesses, funerals, charity, etc.

How do you feel about GoFundMe? Good, bad, etc.?

I'm certain that there are legitimate as well as illegitimate uses of these public funding sites. While it may seem like a good idea in theory, in practice it's quite another thing. The example the OP gives about a couple asking others for money to fund them having the time of their lives while traveling is not something I'd want to contribute to. There's a group called Workampers https://workamper.com who live a mobile existence but do so on their own dime...

Default yup

IMO, it's no different than a panhandler with a tin cup, especially when it is a frivolous event like the one you posted. Those in need with life threatening challenges have my sympathy...if this works for them, so be it.

"Cyber panhandling" would make a great domain name for one of these funding sites...

Bingo !!!

That’s the correct answer, as far as I’m concerned.

I do fund some GoFundMe efforts, but I’m not a big fan. I much prefer funding micro loans through a groups like Kiva (https://www.kiva.org/) where there is some effort made to pay back interest free.

These are great examples of fund-worthy causes IMO. I am less enthusiastic about some person starting a widget-making business using GoFundMe. I think anything that serves as business seeding, is more appropriately served by micro loans.

I think these sites are great, providing WAY more reach than would otherwise be possible. And if I don't want to contribute, it's much easier to ignore than someone asking me face to face.

I'm all for these kinds of sites.

I'm not sure how one would even know to be annoyed with, perturbed by or have any feelings against - unless one was looking for it. I've never been contacted, poked or hit up by any GFM person or project. Just forget they're there and you'll never even know they are. Otherwise, find a great cause or project, donate and follow it to see where it goes. No one has to participate.

A GoFundMe campaign started by her mother-in-law has provided a little support for my daughter who is dying of brain cancer.

Are you guys familiar with Patreon? Same thing, except those asking for money are artists and musicians - even gamers. To me it sounds like a grass roots subscription service.
