If you're not used to 'em, they're wildly unsettling! Didn't realize y'all got them in NJ.

That was a weird feeling. Now I know what an ant feels like.

There's some new cracks in the cross road down the block according to a friend.

My neighbor thought a car crashed into his house.

Default Just experienced my first earthquake

I am out of town for a few days and sitting in a hotel in Albany New York. I just experienced my 1st earthquake having grown up in the midwest and now living in Texas we don't have a lot or any. The bed actually shook side to side for 10 seconds and everything in the room shifted a little bit it was quite unnerving but I thought it had to be an earthquake and sure enough it was. For those living in California I'm sure you're laughing at me but it was pretty bizarre. Not heard the magnitude yet but to shake a 5 story hotel it must have been pretty significant. There has also been one small aftershock.

My very first earthquake experience occurred on 8/23/2011. We were at the aquarium in Baltimore, and the whole place shook. I thought that it was part of the Aquarium's 4D Show, but staff moved the dolphins into a smaller enclosure and we were moved out to the street which was full of others escaping large buildings. We rushed back to Charlottesville only to learn that the epicenter of this 5.8 earthquake was in nearby Mineral, VA. Evidently it shook the entire east coast...

About 10 years ago there was one centered in the Niles Michigan area - it was a 4.2 or so I believe.

I was sitting at my computer desk - I was living in a cement block walled house on a slab at the time - and I had large bookshelf speakers on home made stands on either side of my desk.

All of a sudden they started moving and I could feel it in my feet.

I remember saying out loud "what the _____ was that??"

As a child I was in the back room jumping on the bed.

STOP JUMPING ON THE BED YOU'RE SHAKING THE WHOLE HOUSE!

The next day the paper told us there was a small earthquake at that time...

-Mike "so... I didn't feel it..."

Here in California, I am chuckling at all the fuss. Look at the photos of Taiwan.

My kids live in Manhattan and their buildings shook. One of the slept through it. I slept through one in Palm Springs a couple of decades ago... Like father, like son.

4.8 epicenter in New Jersey, surprised at how strong it was here, 168 miles away?

I realize that and believe I mentioned this in my post. I think if we switched tornadoes with earthquake our experiences may flip as well.

That's quite a long shake for only a 4.8! I'll be honest, I've been in quakes that size you couldn't even feel. Quake depth, proximity, and the type of ground you're on will all have an effect on how much you feel it. Our house is on a hill, built into the bedrock so we don't get a lot of movement.

Also, the taller the building, the more pronounced the shaking. Maybe the building you were in was built on landfill as well, that can really amplify the movement.

I was in a couple of very minor ones when I lived in the Puget Sound region years ago. I felt them, but barely, and didn't give them a thought. We're back in the PNW in Eugene now, so I guess this area is primed for a big one, but so far, nothing. But the most obvious earthquake I ever experienced, by FAR, was a quake with an epicenter in central Virginia back in around 2011. I was in the Philly area, a good distance from the epicenter, but my whole house shook VERY noticeably - I was working at home at the time and the bookcases in my office were notably wobbling around. Nothing damaged, but very disconcerting for someone with very little earthquake experience. Wasn't absolutely sure what it was, but I went outside to find all of my neighbors out there too, wondering what in the heck was THAT?!?! We assumed it might have been an earthquake, but didn't know for sure until we started hearing about it on the news. My brother and his family lived in Roanoke, Virginia, pretty close to the epicenter, and they had some damage to their house from it.

I hope I'm never in a big one. Our condo is pretty new and built like a tank, so I doubt we'd be in any immediate danger of a collapse or anything (IF we're at home), but the hits to infrastructure, gas and electric delivery, etc, could still be very dislocating...
