00-Cedar over Walnut
Other then Lowden, does anyone else make one in non-custom form? Deep body, 00-size?
Played the Lowden, looking for options. Scott

Scott, I don’t know for certain of any factory-built Double O’s that have solid cedar tops over solid walnut backs and sides, but you’ve got at least a couple of options if you’re open to other back and side woods.
Seagull makes their “Folk” model that is, essentially, a 14 fret Double O. I’ve got the least expensive model, which has a solid cedar top over laminated cherry back and sides. It sounds great, and even though I own several Martins and a Gibson and several custom guitars built to my order by handbuilders, that humble little Seagull still gets played quite a bit. That model is available in several different wood combinations, and I think they do make some in walnut. Whether that’s in solid or laminated walnut, I couldn’t tell you. Takamine has made some cedar-topped 12 fret Double O’s; the one I owned for a few years had a solid cedar top over laminated maple back and sides. Again, it was a dandy little guitar. I don’t know what Takamine’s current product line is like, but you might find something promising there. What you may have figured out is that some manufacturers are more enthused about cedar tops than others. Neither Martin nor Gibson is wild about cedar, which is unfortunate, but other manufacturers like Seagull/Simon & Patrick and Takamine are much friendlier towards it. So look at those companies first. Hope this helps. Wade Hampton Miller |

Washburn Folk
I have one of these. It's fabulous for the price if you can find one out there.

Maybe post in the Custom Shop area to see if any builders or guitarists have one. I'd imagine it would sound nice, depending on what you want.

I bought a used Larrivee 00-09, I believe it was part of a custom run, that is cedar over rosewood. It is a fantastic little guitar, very warm and inviting. I'm not sure it still available but I would check with the company to see if something similar is.

Larrivee has done a few short "semi-custom" runs with cedar. 00 size among them.
I keep thinking a really want a Cedar/Black Walnut 00, and that I should just go ahead and order one from Ed Bond (Tinker/Halcyon). Then I remember I live in Phoenix and buy another carbon fiber.

You might want to check out Halcyon Guitars, http://www.halcyonguitars.com/. There have been a number of posts about them if you do some searching. I believe they have made a deep body OO and have walnut and cedar as options.

Here are two fine offerings from Takamine's MIJ Pro Series:
https://www.esptakamine.com/products...2-pro-series-3 https://www.esptakamine.com/products...2-pro-series-3 I used own a Lowden S23 Nick Webb edition of cedar over walnut... it was pretty sounding fingerstyle instrument but too limited and too overtoned, not a good strummer at all. Excellent in DADGAD tho. eric

I know that Huss and Dalton has made them as I played a new one in a guitar shop a couple of years ago. Whether or not the dealer custom ordered it I do not know. It was a really nice 00.

BURRELL GUITARS--00
I would contact Joe Burrell in Mississippi. He has built some deep body 00s that are astonishing. He has some cedar on hand, and some Peruvian Walnut which is pretty interesting stuff. And of course he can source what you need. His guitars are LOUD and responsive.
601-214-0905 He is a prince of a guy, and an amazing luthier. |

May I add..
The guitar I built recently was very close to what you're talking about--
American Black Walnut back and sides. Alaska Yellow Cedar top.. technically more Cypress than Cedar. Classical body, which is very close to a 00, though braced for steel strings. Its fine little guitar, if I do say so myself. Not that this answers your question exactly, but I concur this is a fine combination of attributes. |

If you haven't already checked, Furch might be an option. I recently picked up a Spruce/Walnut GA that's exceptional. I know they use cedar quite a bit, so it might be a combination that you can get into for a reasonable price.

The McIlroy AS25 is a 00 size cedar over walnut similar to the Lowden S23. Its also bit deeper body: 115 mm vs 105 mm.
