Cool Which Mic?

I have a Alhabra guitar that I really like and do not want to change in any way. No pick up of any kind. There are times I would like to have in louder, so I was thinking of putting a mic out in front. So the question I am asking: What's a good mic for this purpose? If there isn't a good one, I guess I will have to play my Guild on those occasions.

What model Alhambra do you have? Mine's a 4P. Dig it too.

You'll probably be recommended quite a few specific mics, but in my experience, it will boil down to the specific application, and mic placement. Mics that are stellar performers in the studio, may be less than ideal in a "live" scenario.(gain before feedback, etc)

I cannot even begin to overstate the importance of mic placement. More important than the chosen mic itself IMO. Regardless of which mic(s) you decide to go with, spend a few hours, if not days, experimenting with mic placement. You'll be amazed at just how much difference a few inches, or a few degrees can make.

I've got perhaps a dozen or so mic's, covering quite a few applications.(voice/instrument/studio/live) Large/small diaphragm condensers, as well as dynamic mics. Prices vary from $100., to well over $1k. per unit. I'd have to say that my most basic set-up, is a single stand-mounted dynamic mic, used for voice and guitar. I generally play seated, and position the mix somewhere between my mouth and the soundhole of the guitar, slightly closer to the bridge of the guitar. Just a slight twist/turn of the guitar, or raising/lowering my body/head/mouth, is all that's needed for a wide variety of sounds. The results can be quite impressive, so take the time to get to know how your mic performs, and use it to your advantage.

Good luck,

Bob

I have a 6P. Have trouble putting it down.

I don't have to worry about placing the mic for singing. One note from my mouth would be like yelling fire in a crowded theater. Thanks for the info on placing the mic for guitar. I will do that.

I had pretty good results with my Loriente Clarita and an Audix ADX51 .....mostly I'd point it at the upper treble bout. Great mics for the price.

A couple of questions first about your particular intended application. It sounds like you talking about playing out live, correct ? Solo or in a group ? Also what would you be plugging the mic into ? Amp? Mixer ? phantom power ? And the most important question what $ budget range for the mic ?

Non-paid ametuer group that varies in size from 2 to 7. We get together about once a month in the summer and more often in the winter at different places, including basements and garages and back yards. I play solo parts and at some locations the sound gets lost. I would be plugging into a Behringer 2 chanel amp. Considering that we just do this for fun and I would be paying for this out of pocket. I can handle up to $250.00.
