Emerald x20: Strings for a warmer tone?
Just wondering if anyone has found strings that warm up the tone on the Emerald x20. I've tried 80/20, PB, and monels... but still sounds somewhat bright/a bit tinny to me compared to my wood guitars... but maybe that's just the nature of CF.?
Thanks!

I’m loving D’Addario Nickel Bronze on mine - definitely warmer than the EXPs it came with. It pretty much lives in open D, so a little looser tension than normal, and I play finger style only, with either bare fingers or just a little nail.

I think the TI Plectrums are the warmest string I've had on my X20. Lasted a long while too. And sounded great.

Thanks for the replies.
With the TI plectrums... what gauge do you use? Their categories are Extra Light, Light, Medium Light....

I never found the right strings for my x20 (earliest version, no truss rod, hollow neck).
But I've since found that those Red brand copper strings add some warmth. A bit dead-sounding on some wood guitars, but might for the bill here... Last edited by tommyld; 02-21-2019 at 07:58 AM. |

I used the Medium-Lights, I know some folks are concerned about the .059 6th string, but it fit fine for me with no issues. I see Strings and Beyond has 10% off TI's right now.

13's may be the magic. When I played my X20 against Jim's, which had 13/53's nanoweb, his sounded awesome and mine sounded the way you're describing. I put 13/56 polywebs on my X30 and it did wonders for the tone. I never got around to the experiment on the X20 but I'd be interested to hear what you come up with.
Does take a little manlier grip on the chords but worth it so far.

I use the same thing on my X20 that I use on my wood guitars, Elixir PB HD Light, 13-53. I do this primarily so that I only have to stock one type of strings, but they also work well for me.
