Sorry to hear that Dermot was injured. I wish him a speedy recovery. I know when I was looking for a McIroy, the wait time would have been pretty long for a US dealer to order one. If he is unable to work that will surely backlog the supply of his wonderful guitars.

Advice on which Mcilroy model?
Hello COM Friends,
I am not a current COM member, but hope to be one in the coming weeks/months. A few years ago I owned a great Ted Thompson guitar, but had to sell it and have been pining after a hand crafted acoustic ever since. I'm close to having the funds for a used high end guitar again and have decided on a Mcilroy. Just seeking some advice on either a 25 series or 30 series. I've always loved the sitka/rosewood tone, but I'm intrigued by the walnut of the 25. I'd go with either an A or AJ series and I play a variety of styles, but primarily look for a stella fingerstyle instrument (celtic, blues, Keaggy type stuff....) any thoughts? much thanks for your consideration Steve Cuss |

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the strange world of the CoM! Your well-placed interest in McIlroys has earned you the distinction of honorary membership on the official roster (above). Congratulations! Regarding the various models and wood combinations......my personal preference is for cedar tops (although I've been tempted to add a spruce topped model eventually). Walnut is absolutely fabulous in combination with cedar, and I believe the A25 is possibly Dermot's most popular instrument. Cedar/rosewood (for example an A35) is also incredibly nice. Really, you can't go wrong with any body size or wood combination. Differences are largely a matter of personal tastes. What you can be sure of is that a McIlroy instrument will be crafted to exceedingly high standards, and will put a lasting smile on your face. ..

By the way, do any COM Mcilroy owners live in Colorado? I'm between Denver and Boulder (geographically as well as sociologically ) I'd love to see and hear one in person before I buy one. We have a fund started and I hope to buy one n early to mid 2012
Thanks Steve Last edited by stevecuss; 12-14-2011 at 01:50 PM. |

COM Friends,
it is time for me to move from honorary status in the COM to actual status of owning a Mcilroy. I'll likely post a want ad in the classifieds later this week, but meanwhile, do any COM members want to sell an A or AJ model? My budget is for pre owned, and I'm most interested in the 25 or 30 series, although if Mcilroy makes one with Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides, I'd be thrilled. Cutaway would be nice, but not a must and electronics are optional. thanks very much for your consideration and feel free to PM me Steve |

Quick COM update,
thanks to a deal with fellow COM'er, Mike Martin, I have now moved from honorary status to actual, literal COM status. AJ20, claro back with sapwood, number #181 Also, an interesting (er.....freakish) piece of trivia. Dermot completed the build on Feb 19, 2004. 8 years to the day that I took delivery. Needless to say it sounds incredible and looks stunning and I'm in Mcilroy Heaven. Thanks to the AGF community for all the advice. I'd never heard of Dermot's guitars before this group and now I'm hooked Mcilroy AJ20 front by steveandlisa123, on Flickr Mcilroy AJ20 Back by steveandlisa123, on Flickr |
