Default Waltzing Matilda (or my sorry attempt at being Larry Pattis!)

I was trying to sit down long enough to finish transcribing Larry's haunting rendition of the unofficial Australian national anthem and decided I'd better commit it to "tape" and see if the tab was actually accurate in real life.

My conclusion? I'm still years away from playing like Larry, but hey, at least the notes seem to be in place

http://www.box.net/shared/uht207um12

(not all that is string noise, but my overgrown bamboo rustling outside the window!)

EDIT: I've been learning a little about using the EQ and managed to reduce some of that close-micing "muddiness". It sounds a little more articulate and closer to what the guitar sounds like in real life, at least on my speakers. Here's a link to the new file, let me know what you guys think

EDIT 2: Completely forgot about the tab! http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=158878

Maak, you KNOW this is a solid performance/recording! Cut the modesty!

Seriously, you've got a great touch. Makes me want to pop in What Tomorrow Brings!

No modesty here! It really was just my second take on the song (the first was more error-ridden). While not spectacular by any means, I though it was decent enough to share, so that's what I did

Of course, I have been playing it while transcribing, so it isn't like I learned the whole arrangement in a day . ohh, and watching Larry's YouTube video about 300 times helped too.

Very nice. Of course I miss the headless video that goes with it.

I took it one step further. I'm now into body-less videos.

(OK, bad joke. Move along now)

Beautiful! One of my favorites. I hate to think how long it would take me to learn it and perform it as clean as you. I know I'll never live long enough to play it like Larry. He did send me the tab and that is what I'm doing on "my summer vacation". See how far I get in 4 months. Again ....good job

Good job, IMO, on this, Mak!

It really sounds very, very good...good intent and emotion delivered via what I know is some good work you've put in with both the right & left hands! Really good vibrato along with volume and tempo variations...I doubt that I ever play it any better than this.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I don't often play in DADGAD, but Larry's arrangement was just too good to pass on.

Well, as you know hann, I only have a Zoom H2 and a $15 dynamic mic. Guess which one I chose?

I can't give you any advice on positioning a pair of professional stereo mics (I have none), but for the H2, close micing pointed at around the 12th fret (as opposed to the soundhole) works well if you don't have a pristinely-quiet recording environment. The problem with that and a condenser mic is the boomy "proximity effect", so you'll probably have to notch out some frequencies around 200Hz during equalization.

What setup do you have at the moment?

Well, I kinda got lucky on the second take. Usually, I make a couple of boo-boos, especially while playing the second variation which I just learned not long ago.

I doubt many of us will

Talk about unexpected visitors!!

Five "good"s from Larry himself....what more can I ask for?

Thanks for the encouragement, Larry. Not having any real-life acoustic guitarists around me to learn from, I make the best of what I can with professional recordings like yours and try to pick up "audible techniques".

OK, I was actually starting to think your comments were honest till I saw that last one. These AGFers have watched your Waltzing Matilda video on YouTube; you're not going to fool them so easily

I may play the right notes, but in terms of phrasing and dynamics, your rendition is still in a completely different league. Now, maybe if I could just get my hands on a Woolson Little Jumbo/Parlor..................

Mak,

Well, I guess I did use the word "good" one too many times...but ya' done good!

...and I still liked what you did, and what you communicated. Perhaps my version is a little more polished than yours (you'll get there), but it's all about what you can communicate to the listener.

I enjoyed myself.

That's all that counts.

"Good" for you!
