Default New Original Song - Nameless Gold

Hi everyone,

I've been working on a few demos of new songs at home which I wouldn't normally share but I like the way this one came out.

I’m getting married in November and I’ve had my late father’s wedding ring remade into my wedding ring.

On the day it was delivered to me, I looked at it and thought of all the time that piece of gold, now without a hallmark, had spent on on my Dad’s hand and this song fell out of me - ‘Nameless Gold’

It's quite a 'lo-fi' recording - I'm playing my Collings OM2hT and recorded guitar and vocals simultaneously with an AKG d5 on the vocals and a Shure SM57 on the guitar, both into a UA Apollo then Logic.

I've applied some EQ, compression, reverb and tape simulation - it still sounds a bit 'demo-y' but I really liked the performance.

You get a better sound with that rig than most of the people on this forum who spend thousands of dollars on high-end mics, converters, and reverb plug-ins. Shows what talen and a decent room can accomplish. Well done.

P.S. Reminds me of Bruce Cockburn's early stuff - which is high praise.

Man, that SM57 picks up the nuances really well, maybe there's bleed from the vocal mic.

Very soothing tune, well done.

Wow, Ben!

That is just lovely and very touching! And beautifully recorded! And you have a very musical voice!

Thanks for sharing this and best of luck on your wedding! I'm sorry that your father will not be there, but maybe in a way, he will...

Thank you! This is just in my spare room but I was careful to make sure I was in a good sounding spot and, obviously, the dynamics pick up less room sound than a condenser would.

There's quite a lot of vocal int he guitar mic and guitar in the vocal mic but I think a bit of bleed can help the sound sometimes.

thank you - the main reason to have the ring made was that I wanted him to be involved somehow and I really think it'll feel as if he is there in some way.

Hey Ben - I sure enjoyed your song! Well sung, well played, well constructed and very touching.

Best of luck with your marriage! By the way, in addition to my wedding ring on my left hand, I wear my father’s wedding ring on my right hand - a reminder and tribute to him. Your lyrics hit home - thank you!

This is great stuff Ben.

You are making great use of your limited "tools"

Song material not exactly my sweet spot but you are nailing what you're feeling and what you're going for.

Do you have a twitter? Would love to follow your stuff as it comes up.

Thanks - found you on twitter yesterday...

Even though I have a couple of Rode NT1a mics I'm really enjoying the sound I can get from the dynamics at the moment - there's less room sound for starters and the top end seems softer.

I struggle with sibilance in my voice so that's the next thing to work on...

I love this. Very soothing, peaceful, zen and non-aggressive. Reminds me of Nick Drake. Cool story too. Amazing what a few basic tools can do in the right hands.
Well done!
