Every once in a while, I get curioius about electric guitars. If you were an acoustic guy, that want's to dabble with one inexpensive electric, what would it be? Consider I have no knowledge or experience with electric. Thanks for the help. Also, saw this listing, would it be a decent option? Think I might also have a 20% off coupon in my e mail somewhere.

I would probably go for an Epiphone Casino just because I like the sound of the semi-hollow body. The Fender you are looking at would not be a bad choice.

I started as an electric player and morphed into primarily acoustic guitar. I will say that I spent the first 5 years of my electric playing life as an angry teen addicted to heavy metal. So, I naturally played humbucker guitars with lots of sharp edges and pointy bits...

But, it was the Stratocaster that really pulled me out of my confused youth and into a more mature palate of music. I got into Stevie Ray, Hendrix, and John Mayer. The Stratocaster defined my 20s, and still does to a point to this day. It is the guitar that best highlights my playing style.

Having said all that, I would investigate the electric guitars used by the bands of the type of music you listen to. It's always good to go for something familiar and try to replicate the songs/sounds you hear on your favorite records. You might turn out to be a Les Paul guy!!!

If I could only have one inexpensive electric it would be a Fender Telecaster. I played Tele's for years and while I rarely do these days, it is an industry workhorse for a reason. There are a million models now and if I had to pick one of them, I'd probably go to guitar center and play them all and would pick the one that felt the best to me. I wouldn't worry about sound as there are a million affordable aftermarket pickups that can radically change the sound.

As for the Stratocaster you linked. It will be a perfectly fine guitar. Strat trems are notorious for not staying in tune and that would be the only thing that might make you want to look elsewhere.

it's tough to nail down to 1 guitar it depends on the genre of music you like but some players make anything sound amazing.

I've been a strat player all my life (it's been my primary electric guitar since about 1979, shortly after I started playing) and I obviously love 'em. But I really have a thing for Fender necks, which are their own animal. If you want an electric that feels more like an acoustic, get a Gibson or Ephiphone or a Les Paul or ES-335 knockoff from Ibanez. But if you want a really different electric experience, go for a Fender - Strat or tele. I love strats but telecasters are probably easier to wrap your head around if you're new to electrics. No tremolo, only one volume and tone control, two pickups with three possible settings. The strat takes more time to unlock it's amazing and unique sounds.

Somebody else recommended the Squier Classic Vibe tele and I'd second that. They're only $400 and you can often find them for 10-15% off, and I've never played a guitar that was a better value. Or a classic vibe strat for the same money, but I'd probably go with a tele for a first electric.

For my money the Yamaha Pacifica 112V can't be beaten for fantastic quality at very reasonable cost. They consistently win the sort of 'best guitar under £xxx' polls we see year after year, or at least get honourable mentions.

The Casino is fully hollow; perhaps you were thinking of the Sheraton which is a true semi-hollow?

Squire Classic Vibe Strat or Tele depending on taste. I'm also a big fan of the Vintage brand solid body Gibson and Les Paul inspired guitars. The company has a horrible generic/ambiguous brand name but their product is really good.

+1...ditto in Butterscotch! They are made from pine like the original early Nocaster so they are lighter , rounder tone and more resonant. They come with Alnico V pups too!!
