Default Cheating G Minor Chord

Talking about cheating when playing guitar. I wanted to see what the feed back would be on my G minor chord.

I think the only cheating you're doing is calling that a G minor chord!

Which end is up? Either way, you don't get G-Bb-D out of it.

If you hit the B string at the third fret to give a D, you get G minor...3 x 0 3 3 3

But it’s just as easy to barre at the 3rd fret and play 355333, and it sounds better.

The usual disclaimers apply......IMHO, YMMV etc.

You have an A on the 5th string here. You'd need to mute that too. So, 3x03x3
That is a Gm triad. It might sound a bit thin.

If 355333 isn't a possibility, I agree with Jaybee that 3x0333 is probably best.

Yes, there's no Bb, but there's B to take its place.

If you leave the 2nd string open you have a G9 chord (GAFGBG), although I personally do not care for the 9th that low in the voicing.

You have no Bb - so you don't have a Gm. You have the 7th (F) on the 4th string. If you're using a pick I'm not sure how you're muting the second string.

So my feedback would be to never use this for a Gm. XX5333 or 3XX333 are your best bets for a simplified Gm.

Speaking specifically on the issue of where in a chord voicing a color note goes, I'd agree that where it sits in relative pitch is an issue, but I'm thinking second factor of where it sits in time can modify that effect in interesting ways.

So for example to play that lower A note after the G tonality notes have been played and are still ringing has a different effect than playing it as simple down-strum.

I'm thinking this in my head compositionally (I can't play guitar and type at the same time) but later on I want to try to fool around with this idea. That may just be me, but compositionally I often start with "what rule or expectation should I break this time..."

It's a perfect Gm, but how do you mute both 6th and 5th if you're strumming? The full 6-string barre is hardly any more difficult and saves the awkward muting.

Here's a nice easy open-voiced Gm, without a barre:

-3- pinky
-x- mute with ring
-3- ring
-0-
-x- mute with middle
-3- middle

Other 3-finger combinations will also work.

Doesn't seem like a proper Gm but that's okay.

According to my app 'Chordbank', the above fingering is 66% of the way to being a Fsus2/G.

Agreed. I have problems with and workarounds for a lot of chords. The Gm isn't one of them.

OP's idea is dangerously close to Gm7; 3 X 3 3 3 X
