Like you, I learned in grade school how to do the "elementary math", but now they don't think it's as important to teach thinking skills as once was the norm. I've been making change calculations since before I was 10 with no problem because it doesn't take any special skills to count.
If someone works behind and counter, they should be able to count.

When you are out of town and want to rent a car, pay at a Motel etc. A credit card is almost mandatory they have to know you for cash and a personal check is a joke.

Oh yeah, carry TWO credit cards so if the first one gags you have a back up to pay. It happened to me when I was checking out at a motel and was straightened out by calling the 800 number on the back of the card---it was a mistake/computer error blah, blah, blah etc. but I was out of luck for a short while. I now carry an extra card to cure this.

The prominent 1909 VDB penny is worth some money but especially the San Francisco mint 1909S, VDB penny. The 1943 zinc penny has a bit of a premium too but not like the VDB penny.

Other than that and 1964 and earlier for real silver coins that's about all the "coin stuff" I know!

I sold that very penny on eBay years ago for $500. It sold as soon as I put it up. Should have asked for more😐,

Oregonians in the vicinity of cities like Portland are forbidden to touch gas pumps. Given that, what is the point of a pump operator topping off a fill to the next dollar (and maybe spilling a bit) if one is paying with a credit/debit card?

I have a coin from when Jesus Christ was a grown man. You'd think it'd be worth something. The last time I checked it was worth something like $40. There isn't much logic in collecting.

Not sure if this proves or disproves your point!

Age is just one of the factors when determining value, but rarity, uniqueness, condition and desirability all factored, it's not a game well understood by those who don't spend the time learning it.

Now, who's got a 1913 liberty head nickel?
