I don't want to start a beer war here , I buy Stella Artois myself (small bottles) for high summer when I've been "toiling in the fields". but I don't think I'm alone when I say that I don't consider lager a beer as such.
This is probably a British thing because we have "ale",by which I mean a "live" ale thst still has live fermentation. We call it bitter. IPA is similar, in that it can look the same and has far more taste than lagers, but it has to be killed to avoid it blowing up - that was the idea - so it could be shipped (in ships) from the UK to the British Raj in India. Bitter needs to be pumped from the barrel - ideally by hand pump - and served at an appropriate temperature to enable the drinker to savour all the flavour and enjoy a maturing after taste. I don't like to feel drunk, and so I usually choose the lowest ABV (alcohol by volume (usually about 3.9 - 4.2%) so I could, before my illness, take about two (sometimes three) pints. Although I've lost a lot of my taste buds, I can once again taste beer, but now I can't face a whole pint. Curiously, some great bitters are made with American hops! If you guys really like beer, please try a properly served live bitter. ou owe it to yourself! Cheers!

If you like IPA's this one is hard to beat. But be warned, it is 8 per cent which by my math puts about 2 and a half bud Lights in every pint

With so many fine breweries these days, look for something fresh from your own neighborhood.

Hey Wad,
The truth is, there are only two types of beer. Ales and Lagers. There are many varieties of each type, but that’s really it. Stella is a lager. Specifically a Pilsner, which is a reference to the Bohemian city of Pilsen, where it was first produced. The difference between the two types can be hard to understand. Simply put, lagers are brewed using bottom-fermenting strains of yeast held at colder temperatures (around 40-52°F), while ales are brewed with a top fermenting yeast that operates at warmer temperatures (around 55-77°F, usually). There are, and can be many other differences, but that’s it in a nutshell. So what’s this got to do with your question? Practically nothing. But the thread was going this direction, so I wanted to add some clarification. I would suggest you try a pale ale. Maybe Dales Pale Ale (Colorado), Fist City (Chicago), or as someone suggested, Sierra Nevada (California). Though all three are ales, my recommendation is based on flavor. None of the three will have your taste buds confused or seem unfamiliar. Stella is around 5.2% ABV, Sierra around 5.5 and Dales is around 6.5. None of these “taste strong” in my opinion, and all are clean and refreshing as is the Stella. Try one or all. You might just enjoy them all. Mark

Lagunitas Imperial Stout is about as tasty as beer can get.
Makes modern-day Guinness look like the sham that it is. https://lagunitas.com/beer/imperial-stout-ale

I'm not much for Stella - yeah, I know some folks consider it sacrilege but chacun a son gout - but Bitburger is my go-to pils (especially during the summer), and the fact that there's a local Russian supermarket-cum-gourmet-shop that sells it cheap is just icing on the cake...
