Default My Latest Build - Matthew's Guitars

This one is a new shape. 16” lower bout and 4.75” deep. It’s as big as a Dreadnought but with a slimmer waist. This is the first time I use my own shape. It has Katalox (pronounced katalosh) back and sides. Katalox is denser than Ebony and has a very complex tone with lots of overtones. It’s similar to African Blackwood. The top is super nice Sitka Spruce. Ebony binding and Aboyna burl appointments. The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer. It’s built light and is a very responsive guitar.

Did you cut your own Katalox? I have a piece here big enough for a 00 side and back set. I'm guessing it will ruin a new bandsaw blade.

How did you find the bending?

I did not cut it myself. I got 5 great sets from Hibdon Hardwood a while back. As for the bending, it went surprisingly well. I laminated the sides so I was able to take them down to .06". To be safe, I used a steam box and Super Soft. Probably overkill, but it worked great.

Very nice indeed and I did not know that is how to pronounce Katalox.
