What’s the preferred action range at the 12th fret for clawhammer?

I'd say about 1/8 inch (.125"). This is a bit high for my liking and both my Pisgah Custom 12" Walnut Tubaphone and Ozark Custom 12" Cherry came set up this way. Pisgah included a lower saddle and I immediately swapped it in for the higher one. Ozark didn't include a lower saddle and I installed a Snuffy Smith lower saddle which gave me an action more to my liking.

Thanks—mine’s sitting right at 1/8” at the 17th fret, which I found out the builder recommends as a starting point. I’m happy with it at this point.
