My partner's guitar and mic also plug into the mixer. I'm having problems with my acoustic tone. Seems like all the highs are gone.

A few questions:

1. Should I use the effects loop on the K4? What are the advantages over plugging straight through the pedals?

2. When I use a TRS cable with the Taylor and engage the loop, the gain level drops and the tone gets muddy. Any suggestions to fix this?

3. The Taylor sounds better when I use the TRS cable and plug it straight into the K4. But I can't use the electric with the TRS cable. Is there an A/B box that switches between balanced and unbalanced cables?

Thanks for the help,

Cyril
Why are you running electric through your K4?

I switch between the acoustic and electric. I only have one instrument input on the board, so I run both guitars through the K4. I also need the distortion pedal which also goes through the K4.

What do you recommend?

Cyril

Hmmm. Although the K4 is an AWESOME preamp, I don't think using it with electric is maximizing it's capabilities. You should be setting the K4 to sound top notch with your acoustic.

How about something like this?

I just started performing in an acoustic duo...so this is what our/my current setup is.

PA - Mackie system (powered speakers) along with a Samson RS12 floor monitor

Vocals - Shure Beta 58

My Guitar Rig - Either my Martin OO-15 (Equipped with Martin/Fishman Ellipse Matrix Blend pickup/mic system) or my Martin OOO-CX1E (Equipped with Fishman Classic 4 pickup system).

I run both guitars Flat (EQ) through my Yamaha Magicstomp acoustic pedal. With the OO-15 I blend the pickup system a little more on the "pickup" side along with the "mic". On my OOO-CX1E, I have the "brilliance" up just slightly.

Works like a gem for me.

My set up is my R Taylor with K&K PWM, K&K Pure XLR preamp into my Roland AC90. For vocals I use an Audix OM-7.

In both my Baranik and my Martin, the new D-Tar Multi-Source pickup, Peterson Strobo-Flip, Highlander preamp. Then either to the house PA or the Fishman SoloAmp.

RTaylor > Schertler DYN on bridge > balanced into Schertler David (which has a special XLR input optimized specifically to the DYN) > balanced DI out to house (if playing thru PA, in which case the David effectively becomes a pre-amp/monitor)

vocals: SM58 > Schertler David second channel else into house

Since the DYN is externally mounted, the chain is exactly the same for any of my guitars (big upside for this scheme).

For rehearsals where I don't bother with the David, I send the DYN into a Baggs PADI then into a Bose L1 -- but that doesn't sound as good as the all-Schertler run into the David!

Are you saying you move the Schertler from one guitar to the other - on the fly?

There's a famous video test of different pickups that shows the DYN being switched between guitars in about 30 seconds -- so in theory it could be switched between sets or during a pause between songs if you wanted to, but I never have. I meant I move it between guitars between gigs (or rehearsals).

Taylor 615 Jumbo -- Samson Airline 77 Wireless #1 --

Guild 412 Jumbo 12 -- Samson Airline 77 Wireless #2 --

(Both guitars have Fishman Infinity Matrix)

---- Pendulum SPS-1 pre-amp - #1 into Ch-1, #2 into Ch-2 --

------- XLR Out -- Fishman SoloAmp Ch-1

------- Aux out -- Digitech VoiceLive Pro - Guitar In
..........(this is because I don't want the VL messin with my guitar tone...)
..........ALso - I can switch guitars fast and easy, and BOTH are available to drive the harmony...

Shure Beta-58 Wireless -- VoiceLive -- XLR Out to SoloAmp Ch-2

The SPS-1, VL-Pro, Shure Receiver, and Samson Receiver pedals all sit in an open-top wooden rack I had made, all pre-wired. Out the back I run one power cord (power strip), the two XLR outs to the SoloAmp, and the VL-Pro footswitch - just takes a few minutes to be up and running.

I switched from Bose L1 to the SoloAmp as soon as it came out - first because it's so much less to carry around and set up, then I quickly came to love the guitar tone. I still use the Bose with my band, and would use it as a secondary PA for any large solo gig.

I sure LIKE the guy's rack with the quick-connect plugs on the back - you don't have to open the back of the rig - very clever! Post #3 - DickensDad - click his RIG link in his signature. I wonder if you lose any fidelity with the additional connection?

Interesting and informative discussion - thanks...

Breedlove AJ-250 --> Korg PitchBlack Tuner --> TC Nova Reverb --> Para DI --> Genz Benz Shen150LT -->XLR to FOH

If I'm playing at church, I use the pre-EQ, pre-FX XLR out on the Shen150LT when my brother is mixing FOH and the post-EQ, post-FX when the other guy is mixing FOH.
