I think these have all been mentioned, but I just have chime in to give propers to a few truly great rock vocalists:

Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Ann Wilson and Steve Perry.
(Yeah, I know some people wouldn't list Perry next to those giants. Journey was a bit pop, but it really was a rock band, if you listen Infinity or Evolution. Those were great albums, and you can't argue that Steve didn't have the awesome chops!)

PS. Go see Heart if you get the chance. They are NOT losing anything. (And Ann's voice last year sounded as pure and strong and clear as you could ever imagine it.)

Not the same type of singer, but I've got a thing for Tim Curry. He's best known as an actor, but I like to hear him sing anything, although he recorded a lot of crazy cheeseball stuff in the 70s. (Who cares... cool voice!)

It was defintely an oversight when I left Wynonna, Stevie Nicks and Natalie Maines (Dixie Chick), Sam Cook, and Eddie Ruffin (Temptations) off my previous list.

I dont know about chills up the spine but recently I bought my kids a Disney CD "the County bears" and Bonnie Raitt is someone I never listened to and was blown away by her song on there with Don Henley-

Also Mac Powell of Third day has a very powerful voice- Hearing him live is really something.

Also Steve Perry come to mind-
"when the lights... go down ...in the cit-aaaay "

Oh and of course Fred Mercs "Melancholy Blues" -

Well then you MUST go out and buy youself a copy of Stay Awake, a compilation of covers of Disney tunes. She does the title tune. It's a wonderful little lullabye.

And Los Lobos does absolutely the finest version of The Monkey Song from Jungle Book. It rox.

Now don't try to kid me, mancub
I made a deal with you
What I desire is man's red fire
To make my dream come true
Give me the secret, mancub
Clue me what to do
Give me the power of man's red flower
So I can be like you

Good call. Sam Cooke could sing the phone book and it would send shivers up my spine. But "Bring It on Home to Me" or "Touch the Hem of His Garment"....or, how about "A Change Gonna Come"? That is some serious spine tingling stuff. I'm ashamed I forgot it in my original list.

RCA had a CD -- now discontinued I'm told called "Sam Cooke: The Man and His Music" and it was, song-for-song, the best CD value out there. 10-15 bucks gets you like 30 of Cook's all time classics. Cover to cover awesome.

Lotsa vocalists I've never heard of. I'll have to check out Paul Brady, and some of the others mentioned.

Sam Cooke- YES!

How about Ray Charles singing America the Beautiful? I get chills just thinking about it!
