Two mic choices, need opinions
I've been looking at reviews and I'm torn. My voice isn't particularly deep, but not particularly high pitched either. I am currently using an SM7B, but looking for something with a little more clarity.
Right now I am deciding between two mics and would like some advice. Reviews are generally good for both. Aston Spirit Neumann TLM102 Thoughts on these mics for male vocals? My website is in my signature if you want to hear my vocals on the SM7B as a reference. Todd

What about a Warm Audio WA-87?
Listening to your voice I was thinking you need something "87-ish". It's a very good mic for the price. But then there's a part of me that say "if you can get a real Neumann...get the real Neumann".

Is the TLM102 considered a "real Neumann?"

Here's a good demo of the TLM102, and frankly I think it sounds pretty good.
Also here is TY Fords review of the TLM 102 https://tyfordaudiovideo.blogspot.co...smikrofon.html I own a few Neumanns, some older, some newer, and I what I have found in my research in buying mics is that many people hate the new Neumann company and almost anything they've produced since Sennheiser acquired the company, so they hate on the new models. But personally I have mics from before and after and they all work for me. I chose them for the tones they gave up for me. I own the U87ai U89i M147 TLM103 (2) KM184 KMS105, and I've made good sounding recordings with all of them. If you want to save a bit of cash or get alot of microphone for your money here's a good deal on a mic from Neumann's red headed step-sister Sennheiser. It looks to share many of the innovations of the highly regarded Neumann TLM107... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sennheiser-...v0:rk:111:pf:0 some reviews... https://recordingmag.com/resources/f...er-microphone/ https://makingmusicmag.com/sennheise...d-mk-8-review/ https://www.magneticmag.com/2016/05/...condenser-mic/ Last edited by rockabilly69; 10-21-2018 at 05:12 PM. |

Yes!
It's not an 87 or a 47...but it's a real Neumann. The TLM series is different than the "classic" Neumanns. One of the things to remember is that a lot of the Neumann sound is the transformers (or tubes) & the capsules together. The TLM series has no transformer (TransformerLess Microphone). You get a very similar capsule, but it doesn't have the same weight. All that said, that doesn't mean it's a bad mic. It's just not what a lot of people thought it was supposed to be...so the TLM 103 & 102 get more than their fair share of hate. When the TLM103 first came out, I made many recordings with one. I liked it a lot. I've only heard the 102 on other people's work - but I've never thought it was lacking anything. I don't know if any of that helps or not.
