Congratulations on your new Guild. I totally understand where you’re coming from as I felt the same way when I received my Huss and Dalton.

I am in no way of the caliber guitar player that would deserve such an instrument but I soon realized that was in my own head only. This fantastic guitar has inspired me to play more in the last five months than I have in the last two years. I noticed marked improvement in my ability, although I am still not all that good.

If you can afford it without taking money away from budgeted expenses... you deserve it!

Super major congrats! I'm not really a good enough player for my fantastic (Guild) guitars, but screw that! I love playing them! They sound great!

the very first IT job I got was Data Center Operations in 1977 at a company called Digital Equipment Corporation..

I was hired the day of the interview, I asked my manager later on how he came to a decision so fast,

he said there are many parallels between understanding code, computers and the like with being a musician.. Based on that you seemed the "type" I could work with

4 decades later........
with no college edu-ma-cation....

I'm in sort of the same situation as the OP. After a 3 month wait, my D55 arrived last week. It needed a set up (action too low), which Sweetwater said they'd pay for.

That said, the D55 is a fantastic guitar. The sound is deep, and my dear wife says that it's very even across the spectrum. It makes my other name-brand dreadnought sound thin. Assuming it comes back OK from the luthier, I will keep it, and it will be played, not babied. Life is too short to sweat this kind of stuff.

Also 40+ years in IT.

We as a community need to do whatever we can to combat the I'm not worthy syndrome. It is just faulty thinking at it's worst. Would you ever say, I'm not knowledgeable enough to go see a big league baseball game, got to stick with AA ball for now? Or, I'm not qualified enough to go to a museum? No, you'd go and learn.

I'm a fan of a few makers, all for differing reasons. What Guild has going for it, particularly the D 55, is balance. I can see how you'd like to sing with it. Now overcome the fear and use it. See how much you improve because you play more, the number one reason anyone should have the best they can afford.

Also do not envy the $6K guitar. You'd be surprised how little an extra couple of grand gets you. And good for you for making the drive.

Well if nothing else you guys are making me feel better about my two recent Larrivee purchases. Thanks. My guitars are so much better than my ability warrants. I will say they inspire me to play more and that’s what matters to me.

I bought my brand new D55 early this year and it’s a wonderful, wonderful and wonderful guitar!
In the band it might get a little less playing time than my D-18 but else it became my main guitar.
People complain the D55 became expensive but compare it to others!
I use 12-56 (light/medium) on mine.

That's how I felt (and still feel) about my Guild F50R, which is the jumbo version of the dreadnought D55. I've had at least a dozen 6-string acoustics in the past. Now I've got one, the F50R, and I'm not looking for another.

Completely agreed. A guitar you love is going to make you want to pick it up to play it and get better. A learner also needs all the help they can get and a great sounding, nice playing guitar can go a long way.

In very few other things is skill associated with deserving of ownership. "Wow, nice Rolex, you must be great at telling the time if you have one of those"?!?

Feel humbled and grateful to own such a lovely thing, but dont feel bad

Congrats again on the D-55. I have one but it is retired from play due to a neck issue so I no longer list it in my signature. It's playable, but I'd rather not. Its a '78 and for years it was my only guitar (I just wish I got the sunburst ).

The D-55 a great guitar, enjoy it.

Life is short, don't worry if "you deserve it" or not. Music isn't a contest or something to earn, its something to be enjoyed by everyone.

The guilds have a longer scale. The D-55 IMHO played better with 12's. 13's are just too much and I don't need to fight that hard.

Wow, thanks for that. That would explain why Guild ships them with the 12s. I guess I've been living in a cave, did some googling, never realized there are so many different scale lengths in guitars. With bass guitars, the vast majority are 34".

I'm not officially an IT person, but I used to love to code back in the 80s and 90s using the general easy stuff - Basic, QuickBasic and later Turbo/Borland Pascal with some easy assembly thrown in.
