Default Keith Richards - Cocaine Blues

His version of the Rev. Gary Davis classic. I wish it showed him playing but the photography is gorgeous, as is his playing here.

I very much enjoyed watching Keef’s version. The images of him are great. That said, although smoking is a part of who he is and certainly add an artistic flair, I’d prefer that it wasn’t so pronounced or included at all. At least those who are likely to view this are older and not so influenced by bad vices.

What a gem. Still having Keith around is a real gift.

Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed it immensely...

Being old enough to be a Stones fan since the early days, I've said for many years, I see a big difference between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards...

Mick is a Rock Star, and Keith is a Musician, in it for the sole reason that he loves playing music...

And just in case anyone hasn't seen the Netflix documentary on Keith, "Under The Influence", it's a treasure from beginning to end...

I’ve also heard it said that Mick is the brains of the band, Keith is it’s heart and soul. In combination, they’re quite a team. I’ve seen a lot of huge acts over the years, and most of them strike me as just people playing music after the first few minutes. The Stones were different, they were so iconic by the time I started seeing them in ‘78 that the mystique never wore off. They didn’t look like people, they looked like ROCK STARS, maybe because they sort of were the very definition of a rock star in those days. I saw them a few times between their ‘78 and ‘81 tours, and it never wore off.

But I believe that even if they’d never become as good at they go as songwriters, Keith’s rhythm playing would have still made them a great band. The way other players have tried to cop his riffs and feel over the years makes him hugely influential - right up there with Hendrix, Clapton, Van Halen, BB...

If there’s anyone who’s feel I’ve tried to emulate in my playing, electric and acoustic, it’s Keef...

So cool to see him as an old codger, ecause he was never supposed to get there. But he carries it well...

Fully agree, and he was my first inspiration to even pick up the instrument. There's something about the guitar work in the Stones that sets them apart from all other bands imo. And the common denominator is Keith.
Agree too about Mick being more of the rock star to Keith's musicianship, but I will say this for him: He wrote some great lyrics, and he was/is a heckuva mouth harp player. Especially in the early years. So, he does a get a nod as a musician too.
They made a great and creative pair. That much is certain.

This is where Keith learned it from. I'm a Keith fan and he does a pretty good imitation of Mississippi John Hurt but in this instance I prefer the original and I think Keith would agree.

That’s Keith’s recording. Weird that someone posted it as being John Hurt.

WOW! You're absolutely correct. My bad! This just goes to show you how what you hear is shaped by what you expect to hear... no wonder they sound similar LOL. The only difference is the difference in the audio quality.

Here is the Jack Elliott version that Keith refers to.

I saw at least four of the same video on YouTube of Keith’s version being attributed to John Hurt, so I’m sure they fooled a lot of people. I don’t know if Hurt even recorded “Cocaine Blues”!
