I visited the GIG in July 2017. They put 4 guitars out on stands that visitors can play. I was told that the rotate the guitars on a regular basis. Nobody else was in the museum when I went so I played all four. Very cool museum and worth a visit.

University President Fisher says he’s already received a personal education in what these vintage instruments add to the art of making music.

“I was always wondering, what’s the difference between my old Silvertone guitar and a Martin anyway,” he says. “Well, now I know! It’s big.”

Agreed- I had a great time visiting, especially since nobody else was there.

Then I had the urge to trek over to Gruhn’s and that was a blast too!

Both are Definitely must see stops in Nashville!

What would be really amazing is if somehow, most of these instruments could be put to good use and played. I don't know if such a thing is feasible, short of the university selling them, and that has its' drawbacks.

If perchance I were to be gifted with 500 state of the art vintage instruments, I would probably sell about 490 of them. But if I learned to play mandolin, maybe only 485.

That article says that some are available to play and that they are working on a loaner program for about 400 of them. Sounds like a great idea.
