In my days of tracking jingles, TV music and the occasional record, a typical live date tracking to tape might be drums, bass, electric guitar, piano, and maybe 6 brass and 5 reeds. Or so. I'd probably use a compressor on the bass, but that'd be it. If there were vocals later, they'd get compressed a little on the way in and maybe again during the mix.
