do you practice plugged in with headphones on .
I'm asking because i am just starting to play around with this .I find it painful when you get it wrong but my word when you get it right it really rocks .
Its just a shame that most advice out there favors the mic up setup .

Hey, Ze...yep, I use headphones a lot, and I mic my guitar! Both go together very well...no feedback!! Everything sounds better with headphones...much closer and you can hear every note.
The danger is "hearing fatigue." As your hearing attenuates in response to the loudness, you keep turning it up until it is loud enough to do serious damage! I use AKG K-240s which are open-backed, so they produce less pressure and cause less fatigue. If you have fully enclosed headphones, take a fifteen minute break every hour to allow your hearing to restore.

I like to practice with headphones while plugged into a my effects processor and mixer. It helps me concentrate better on what I'm playing, plus it's nice to occasionally add a little reverb and other effects; keeps things from getting boring.

I practice every day straight acoustic.
But I also have my gigging setup in my home office/studio and when I have a job coming up I practice everything as if on stage, singing though a microphone, miking the guitar or using my OMC-Aura, no stopping through an entire set....and I record it. Listening back is proabably more useful than anything. I agree though, a lot of headphone time is not only ear fatiqueing, it's damaging at lower volumes than you think. Use care...
